TEHRAN - Iran Air will be privatized next Iranian calendar year (to start March 20, 2008), said here Wednesday the road and transportation minister.

Talking to MNA, Mohammad Rahmati added that Majlis (Iran's Parliament) has ratified the privatization of the HOMA and Iran Air Tour airlines, announcing the shares will be sold in Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE) next year.

The shares will be offered in the TSE due to the proposal of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, he said.

Iran Air operates services to 20 scheduled and five charter destinations. The cargo fleet operates services to 35 international and 25 domestic destinations. Its main base is Mehrabad International Airport, Tehran.

Iran Air Tour is a subsidiary of Iran Air and operates scheduled domestic services and international services in the Middle East, as well as charter services including Europe and its main base is Mashhad International Airport.

I wonder if the airline will be able to reduce loss making domestic service which operate under government imposed price control?
I remember reading an article in Europe with IR's management stating while international services were wildly profitable, domestic flying was being operated at significant losses due ticket prices being fixed.

For some odd reason, I can't believe this will be completely privatized. That may start a chain reaction giving other agencies the idea to privatize. We'll see how well this goes for Iran Air, and I do hope it does well.

I agree with you !
Iran is a nation whose belief in State Corporatism dates back to the days of Shah and it is most unlikely that the current Government will ever hand over its flag airline to a private company. If it does, it will be pure window dressing to some fake local corporation staffed with Government appointees.

If Iran air is indeed placed in private hands it would have a clear albatross round its neck as the politics of the Iranian Government would be a tremendous influence on its financial wellbeing, never mind the subsidised domestic services which would, by themselves, place a significant brake on any serious private bidder.

Hot Air is all I can make of it... and an interesting topic to keep Iranians focused on something else rather than the steadily worsening economic and standard of living conditions of most. Typical ploy of the average populist regime anywhere on Earth !!

Drive for privatization is not new in Iran. Matter of fact some institutions have already been sold off including telephone/wireless companies and banks and has gained steam in the last few years. Companies primarily from neighboring countries such as Turkey and Arab states have invested with success to date.

According to this wikipedia posting 240 companies are pending privatization of a potential 1000.

Will a privatized Iran Air maintain the TEH-CCS flight? Sometimes I doubt that flight could survive without a large gov't subsidy although I'm assuming the subsidies will remain in place post-privatization for "strategic reasons".

EP is now owned by the Social Security Organization of Iran. While this is a government agency, it is in the business of pension investment.

Hopefully this will provide the airline with that valuable cash injection to buy some new aircrafts and to scrap those aweful 747SP's and 727's that should have been consigned to the scrap yard years if not decades ago!

Even if America cannot sell them aircraft, I am sure AIrbus can sell them new aircraft. Or even possible some Russian aircraft?

The problem with Iran Air fleet renewal has never been money, but rather the US sanctions. In early 1990s, IR signed a deal with Boeing for 14 (or so) B737-486. The contract was never completed when the US government refused to issue the export permit. In the early 2000s, IR signed another deal with Airbus for 4 A330s. Ultimately, the aircraft could not be delivered due to US pressure on Rolls Royce. IR has been interested in the Tu 204 with the RR engines (the original PS90 engines are not suited for the Iranian geography). This has not been possible to date again due to the US pressure on RR. Most recently, IR has ordered a few Tu204-100Es for its B9 subsidiary. These are to have the PS90A2 engines. However, there is a large possibility that this deal will fall through as well. The PS90A2 engines were developed in conjunction with United Technologies, and thus possibly subject to the long arm of US policy.
I am interested to see if IR is going to order the new Sukhoi SSJ.
