I have noticed that IB has begun selling some of their MD-80's and was wondering what the near future holds for the type in fleet. Maybe some who follow the airline closely can give their perspective on how much longer the Mad Dogs will be in the IB livery. Inevitably, it will be all Airbuses
Not too long ago, 2J acquired a lone MD-87 to replace an A319. Another will be soon picked up by Air Uganda. Lastly, Pronair plan to acquire two MD-87's and MD-88's.

IB already started reducing its MD-80 in mid-2005. Today 12 MD-87 (once 24) and 12 MD-88 (once 13) are left, with some of the MD-88s to stay until at least mid-2009.

One more MD-88 has "left the fleet". EC-FIH had an accident and was damaged (14-Aug-2007).

Iberia is going to a unique short/medium haul fleet, whose aircraft is the A320 family (=319/320/321). The MD87 are being replaced by the A319 (IB receives one per month, and the MD88 by the A320. (By the way, most of the A320 went or will go finally to Clickair due to their landing!). We could expect (but it's not sure) a few extra A319/A320 to recover the fleet from the loss of some A320 in favour of Clickair, but what is sure is that by the end of next year the MD will have probably left IB.
Also notice that some of the MDs that are now leaving were operating routes from BCN. Most of them leave the fleet as their routes are transferred to Clickair (BCN- MAH / IBZ / PMI / OVD / ALC / BIO, and others will follow such as SVQ- LPA/TFN), and others as the aircraft changes to an Airbus (BCN-ORY/MIL).

I always found it to be somewhat ironic that some of IB's MD-87 (5?) were directly bought by their biggest competitor in their home market, Spanair. I recently flew with one of those birds - EC-GRL - from GRX to MAD and was surprised to see how much care and effort went into the renovation of the cabins - a far cry from the somewhat neglected state (smell, worn seats) of the MD's cabins in Iberia's fleet in the recent years.

Interesting statement as IB does maintenance on the MD fleet for Spanair.
These are my principles but if you don't like them I have others

Many ex- IB MDs are allocated in Spanair fleet by lessors. It's true that some MDs come from IB, but also others come from SAS or from other operators.

I assume that they have to furbish the aircraft as their own cabins are furbished.

The cabins of the MD show their ages, but they are not that bad. The pitch is better than in the A320 and overall the aircrafts are well maintained. Another issue is that the MD cabin looks (even if it's well maintained) unfashioned with respect to the Airbuses: they are less bright, the aircraft is overall noisier, the seats of course are a bit overused, etc. etc.

I think the A319 is a good replacement for the MD87. Two days ago I was very lucky to fly with the newest one in their fleet EC-KHM and I liked the new interior of IB very much. The new white leather seats are comfortable, modern and better than the old blue cloth seats.
here you can see a pic which is a little be to darken.

Does anyone know why the seats on the MD-87s are 3 2 and the 88s are 2 3 (seats). Or put another way the seats are ABC aisle DF on the 87s and AC aisle DEF on the 88s? Flew connecting flights a few weeks back and was surprised to see them different.

I knew the fleet was in the process of being phased out but I didn't realize the end was so near. Too bad, the Mad Dogs look great in the IB livery. Any idea as to where the remaining aircraft will end up? I would like G4 to get the MD-87's, as they are a novelty, but I'm sure it's not likely.
