Here are some questions about Varig's fleet. First of all, do they still operate the 747-300? If so, to where? I know LAX was a destination, but where else? If they still have them, what to they plan to do with them, retirement wise? Replacements? How about the MD-11? I know they used to operate one 747-400, still around? Also, is Varig an acronym? What about VASP, what do they stand for? Thanks a lot.

VARIG stands for:
Viacao Aerea Riograndense (in English would be Rio Grande's Airline, as it's base was originally in Porto Alegre, Estado do Rio Grande do Sul)
VASP stands for:
Viacao Aerea Sao Paulo (Sao Paulo's Airline)

According to Bill Harms site:
These first three B747-341's belong to Air Atlanta, but are subleased to other airlines such as follows:
24106 B747-341 AIR ATLANTA ICELAND TF-ATH ex PP-VOA [Leased to EL AL][To be Leased to Iberia]
24107 B747-341 AIR ATLANTA ICELAND TF-ATI ex PP-VOB [Leased to Virgin Atlantic]
24108 B747-341 AIR ATLANTA ICELAND TF-ATJ ex PP-VOC [Leased to Air Algerie][To be leased to Iberia]
The following two B747-341's are in freighter conversion process for Atlas Air:
23394 B747-341(M) ATLAS AIR ex PP-VNH
23395 B747-341(SF) ATLAS AIR ex PP-VNI
And here I found 3 B747-400's ex-Varig:
24956 B747-441 GARUDA INDONESIA PK-GSI ex PP-VPG
24957 B747-441 AIR NEW ZEALAND ZK-SUI ex PP-VPH
24896 B747-475 AIR NEW ZEALAND ZK-SUH ex PP-VPI
So Varig do not operate either B747-300 or B747-400 now. Long range routes are operated by MD-11's (which will be replaced by B777's in the future) and B767-200/300's.

as far as i know, varig will receive its first 777s in 2002. only two will be leased, and some more are directly bought.
varig doesn´t want to rely as heavy on leasing aircraft anymore because of the drop of the brazilian currency and the strong dollar, varig had to spent a lot of money on leasing, and regarding the last year, varig would habe earned money if it had owned the most of its aircraft.
