Northwest Thanksgiving Schedule

Hey all!

I am flying out of Grand Forks on 11/21 to Seattle. The ticket cost me an arm and a leg, as I needed a very specific schedule. Schedule was depart GFK @ 1:10pm, arrive 2:33pm, depart MSP 5:06pm. That gives me a good 2.5 hour layover. However, I just got an email saying my flight was changed to depart GFK 3:04pm, arrive 4:28pm, with the same flight to SEA. That gives me a very, very slim chance to make the connection. Running from the A or B concourse to the F concourse. I had the exact same thing happen on my way home in August ( GFK-MSP-SEA On NW Saab And 757, Pics & Vid (by Thepilot Aug 10 2007 in Trip Reports) ). Is this a normal change for the winter, or is it just around the holiday time. Also, why would they sell the flight at that time if they knew that it would change (I purchased the ticket around 3 weeks ago, got the change email 1.5 weeks ago). Since I am nearly guaranteed to miss my connection, am I eligible for any compensation. Any light shed on the situation would be helpful. Thanks!

We have not had a 1:00 pm departure in Grand Forks for the longest time. However, for a while that flight was in the system because it didn't look as if it was going to continue to Devils Lake on the 21st. However now it is going to Devils Lake (you booked before the firm schedule came out) Here are the GFK flights for Nov 21.

NW 1523 Dep: 5:00am Arr: 6:00am DC-9-30
NW 454 Dep: 8:10am Arr: 9:16am DC-9-50
NW 5610 Dep: 11:00am Arr: 12:15pm CRJ-200 (Operated by Pinnacle)

I am also taking NW for thanksgiving (PHX-MSP-PHX in my case, and Wednesday thru Saturday as well). I booked my flights three months in advance to get a decent airfare, although it was still a good $50-75 more than normal on that route), and my flights had schedule changes as well, although my schedule changes were more in advance, like maybe 2.5 months ahead of time. Anyway one flight, I think my PHX-MSP on the A320, only got moved about ten minutes or so, but my return, MSP-PHX on the B753, moved a whole half-hour later. Unfortunately this is probably too late to catch the city bus and I'll have to find a ride on that Saturday night when most of my friends are from out-of-state and the rest (I'm in college) are probably going to be drinking by then. NW probably cost me like $15 to get home because of it. A lot of airlines do this actually, but I don't know why more don't finalize their schedules 90 days in advance, just as that is the earliest time you can make seat assignments. At this point I just hope my B753 stays a B753 and doesn't turn into a B752 as I've never been on a B753.

When you book tickets many months in advance you ought to expect schedule changes. Airlines readjust their schedules frequently, especially around holiday times.

NWA and Airlink are doin almost no flying on the Thanksgiving afternoon, and Friday morning.

Here's some exerpts from an internal email about the schedule:

"A schedule change run on Saturday, 29Sep07 dramatically reduced the number of flights Northwest and our Airlink partners will operate on the afternoon and evening of Thursday, 22Nov07 – the Thanksgiving Holiday in the United States. This near-elimination of flying during the second half of that day is the result of traditionally scarce and unprofitable loads on this holiday afternoon and evening.

In addition, because we are eliminating many flights on the afternoon and evening of 22Nov07, we will have some aircraft out of position the next morning and will cancel some launch flights only for Fri, 23Nov07.

Because the loads for these flights are so low, there are not huge numbers of passengers affected. However, those who are affected will be contacted during the next few days for reaccommodation. Reservations is rebooking these customers using the following guidelines:

Passengers originally booked to travel on Thurs, 22Nov07 or Fri, 23Nov07 whose flight schedule has been changed will be allowed to:

- Rebook cabin-to-cabin for the same city pairs up to two days earlier than their original flight(s) or as late as Sat, 24Nov07.

- Waive any fees normally applied to voluntary changes.

- If the customer desires to change the unaffected end of their trip to protect the original length of stay, they will be allowed to do so on a cabin-to-cabin basis.

- If the customer desires to cancel the trip as a result of the schedule change, a refund will be processed. "

This happened to me two years ago. I was booked LAX - DTW - DCA - MSP - LAX. I booked my ticket 3 weeks prior to departure and just before departure, I received a phone call from NW regarding a flight cancellation. I was flying back to LAX and my whole purpose was to spend as much of the day as possible in DCA - as it is Thanksgiving. I had to cut my holiday short by 4 hours, which is a lot of time for spending a holiday with friends and family, and had to take a 2pm departure from IAD. I was not charged any fees, and most importantly, I was upgraded to F from IAD - DTW - LAX. My flights were AMAZING!!! I had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner on the flight from DTW and the F/A sent me home with a bottle of merlot. I had no choice but to send in a comment/compliment as she was really terrific!!! The service in the cabin ( on both flights ) made up for the 4 hours I lost in DC.

This really was THE perfect ending of a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday! Thank you Northwest Airlines! Because of this, I am glad NW is a part of Skyteam. These people in the Midwest are so friendly!!!

Its not that big of a deal to have a press conference for it, its not sensative information so its fine.

Well, it was a mass emailing sent to hundreds of people, so I doubt it was proprietary. Furthermore, I didn't identify the source or recipients.

Also, the public *does* already know about it, since they're being called about rebooking flights.

It makes sense, and loads are often in the dumpster on these routes. Makes sense to scale back on unprofitable flying, in addition it gives employees more time off to be with friends/families, and also helps to an extent cut back on the crew scheduling issues as pilots start to time out at the end of the year.

DTW-LGW, DTW-CDG, DTW-FRA, DTW-DUS, and 1 of the 4 DTW-AMS flights are cancelled.
The only thing going across the Atlantic on Thankgiving day from DTW is 3 of the AMS flights (2 A333 & 1 752).

MEM - the third bank is essentially gone.

DTW - about 50% of frequencies into business markets are cut throughout the middle of the day with the 5pm bank being most of the last flights out for the day. The 7pm bank is gone except for MCO & AMS, and the 9pm & 10:30 banks are completely gone.

Didn't bother to check out MSP.

At this point, it seems like a good move to me...As mentioned, the loads on the holidays are often quite low, bolstered only by the holiday sales where they basically give away the seats on the holidays themselves.

Thanks for the replies guys! I was surprised, as I though the Wednesday before Thanksgiving would be one of the busiest days of flying, and thus frequency would increase. I guess not. Also, I have rebooked my flight on that day. I was forced to miss a class, but whatever, I need to be back in Seattle that night. At least that flight was cheaper than the one I purchased, so it didn't cost me much. Thanks!
