SX was the 4th busiest carrier at CMH in August up from 5th in July. In August they over took AA in number of pax boarded for the 4th busiest slot. Pax numbers provided at http://www.port-columbus.com/flight/stats/2007/2007_Monthly_Stats.htm

CMH traffic is up 26% this August vs. last, and up 15% for this year overall. Very impressive numbers, and based on this growth, looks like CMH will be busier than PIT next year, if not this year.

They almost took the 3rd busiest slot. SX trailed US by only 1368 pax for the month. CMH pax numbers overall are doing very well.

Courious if any of the routes are doing poorly for SX. Anyone have any 1st hand knowledge of how particular flights do out of CMH?

Its obviously hard to say for sure, but if you look at the ticket prices, you could probably get a good guess at their load factors. Most of the west coast flights are going out full...or close to it while flights to Chikopee might not be doing as well.

94,708 pax / 846 operations = 111.947 pax per flight

@ 144 seats per flight that's a crude load factor of 77.74%

Hard to know exactly what that means though...

For a brand new airline that could be consdiered great
For a peak summer travel month when many airlines ran 85-90% full domestically, 77.74% might primarily be vacation travel spill that will dry up with the start of school.
For some oddball markets and off-destination airports like Bellingham, that could be considered fantastic.
For an airline that sells a good chunk of inventory at loss-leader prices, 77.74% might be less than they need.
For an airline that plans to make a good piece of revenue from discretionary onboard sales, this might be less important than average onboard sale per passenger.

Guess I'm kind of playing devil's advocate both ways. Obviously this is a very decent number (compared to say, something in the 40's) but it's hard to know really how they're doing based just on a decent load factor like this.

I'd be curious to know how traffic was this summer at DAY/CVG/CAK/CLE/CAK.

From the T100's these are load factors from late-May start up through 6/30 by market:

OAK 85.0%
GSO 81.8%
FLL 81.5%
BUR 81.4%
RIC 81.4%
MCI 79.1%
BLI 78.5%
PSM 76.2%

Florida routes are starting to boom (naturally this time of year)....RIC has always done well from day 1.....West Coast has started to taper off....Milwaukee (the real head scratcher) is doing horribly with ticket sales right now.

For whatever reason, MKE does not have a good track record of responding to low-fare service unless it is to somplace like Florida or Vegas. Some examples...and some of these do go back 10 years...of airlines coming in to MIlwaukee and trying low-fare service to other destinations.

Vanguard
MKE-MCI was pulled after less than 3 months of loads about 35%.

AirTran
MKE-BWI does fine in summer and dries up severely when school starts until the following spring. That's why they've been in and out of it so often.

ProAir
MKE-DET averaged fewer than 20 people on a 737 and pulled out in a six months. ProAir ultimately lived only a few more years, but they had far better success filling planes to their other destinations.

Sun Country
MKE-MSP did relatively poorly, unlike their Florida and Vegas scheduled flights from Milwaukee which did well.

MetroJet
MKE-CMH advance-booked so weakly they pulled it before it was to begin
MKE-IAD lasted 6 months and averaged about 33 people per 737 trip in spite of connections & thru flights to RDU and MCO.

With Southwest flying CMH-MDW on the cheap and ORD airlines generally matching that fare, I have doubts there is a great attraction for Chicago-Columbus traffic to use Skybus at MKE. Milwaukee-Columbus is only about 6.5 - 7.0 hours by car, and car is probably the biggest competition in a market this short. Here's what a family of four would pay for a MKE-CMH-MKE weekend trip 12/13 through 12/16

$240.00 Fare @ 4 pax ($25 southbound, $35 return)
....77.20 Taxes & Fees
....44.00 Parking in structure ($11/day)

$361.20 excluding the cost of a rental car if needed.

Even with pretty good fares available, $361.20 is not pocket change. Is it cheap for flying a family of four anywhere? Absolutely! But is it worth it for a family of four? Maybe. I'm a big advocate of flying and would always fly if possible when the drive was 6.5-7.0 hours. But a lot of people would not. And when you consider the actual door-to-door time, it's not that big of a savings to fly a trip like MKE-CMH.

RIC has been so overpriced for so long and with WN choosing ORF a few years back, all them there southerners have been dying for cheap travel. I don't know how long SX's trend in RIC will last. It was only a couple of years ago RIC lowered their fees to allow low cost carriers to come in is what's changed the airport around. Especially after they botched the WN deal and sent it packing to ORF. Now you have FL and B6, so now they really sunk to the bottom of the barrell and allowed SX to come in. About time, I just hope they don't blow it with all the new revenue coming in and the major facelift.

Hey Quagmire... giggity, giggity, goo!
