CO operating POM-NRT flights for Air Niugini

CO Micronesia (CMI) is currently operating weekly flights, on a “wet lease” basis, for Air Niugini (PX) between Port Moresby , New Guinea (POM) and Narita , Japan (NRT). In this “wet lease” arrangement, CMI provides an aircraft, complete crew, maintenance, and insurance to PX. CMI is operating a Boeing 737-800-equipped flight with GUM-based flight crews every Saturday and will continue to do so through at least mid-November. The through flight is approximately eight hours and includes one stop in GUM for fuel and a change of crew.

Now this will be good for a laugh... are they letting the pax off the plane at GUM or do they have to stay onboard? And if they're letting them get off, in keeping with the TSA policy of clearing through immigration *ALL* transit pax, are they all clearing US immigration in GUM?

I'm all but certain they will stay on.... given the difficulty of US immigration and the fact that Papua New Guinea is not, as far as I know, a visa-waiver nation.

But, at the same time, it provides what is probably the fastest, most efficient service between NRT and Papua New Guinea. 8 hours in a 737-800 sounds no worse to me than one of those CO 757 flights to TXL or ARN out of EWR.

That's a great question. I believe the policy is that all passengers must clear. Maybe they will be able to secure a waiver for this service.

In late 1973 or early 1974 when I was on Guam - Air Nauru (or a previous version) began flying Nauru to Japan with a fuel stop at Agana.

At that time - the pax could not exit the aircraft while on Guam.

Let's hope things are better now.

I am sure the pax have to remain on board, as soon as they let them having a stretch in the terminal, chances are too big someone can enter the US, even if they make sure noone can pass security, maybe by just missing the flight.
This was normal procedure when many long haul flights were making stop over in countries which were complicated on visa, like the stopovers in Iran, Pakistan, Kuwait etc on flights between Europe and South east Asia until the 1980s, as there are no doubt many people on board who can't get or don't have a US visa.

Under the new rules, every passenger must undergo full frontier formalities, even if they intend merely to change planes."

While not changing planes, US customs and immigration may consider it transit. The point is anyone in any US jurisdiction must be checked, lest they be a terrorist that passed through and were not detained.
