Six possible new buyers emerged for the first evaluation phase to buy Alitalia during this evening's administration council: Aeroflot, Air France-Klm, Air One (AP Holding), Texas Pacific Group, Cordata Baldassarre and Lufthansa.

"a more accurate evaluation of the intrested subjects will be done soon" said AZ in a pr note

I thought that Aeroflot/Air One/Air France/KLM and Texas Pacific had already declined.

So did I. Wishful thinking on AZ's part?

LH is interesting, if they went ahead to buy AZ, they'd control a major part of Italy's domestic and Italy-Germany traffic, seeing as they control AP if i understand correctly. If the regulators will even allow it, which i doubt.

Odd that LH would compete against their Italian partner Air One

Or very smart. This way they'll have two parties in the run.

Lufthansa says not interested in Alitalia
October 05, 2007: 05:18 AM EST

Deutsche Lufthansa AG reiterated that it is not interested in the troubled airline Alitalia SpA, after newspaper reports said the German carrier could be shortlisted as a potential buyer.

Good start. My bet is on the same outcome as the last round - the Italian government being the new owner of the offered shares.

Alitalia's Loss Narrows in First Half
By KENNETH MAXWELL
September 13, 2007

The 49.9% Italian-state-owned airline's net loss was €211.1 million ($292.1 million), compared with a year-earlier loss of €220.2 million. Alitalia didn't disclose second-quarter details.

The Rome-based company said that while its first-half revenue rose 3.1% to €2.31 billion from €2.24 billion a year earlier, operating costs grew 3% to €2.44 billion from €2.37 billion.

They are loosing 1 euro for every 10 euros in revenue. That is equivalent to 2.5 million euros PER DAY. Anyone remembers when the last time they were in the black? That sounds like a pretty healthy business, doesn't it?

These companies may or may not be interested in investing in AZ...this is a "short list" of corporations that Alitalia, along with their financial advisors Citi, have identified as possible investors and who AZ hopes to approach in the future.

The named parties have said nothing of their intentions, except for an occasional "no comment"...

How many threads did we have on this topic about AZ yet ?

Nobody from outside Italy, and who is right in his mind, will buy AZ. There are simply too many hurdles in this ...

The German TV station N-TV just quoted LH, saying that they are interested in talks with AZ, but they demand a higher cooperation by AZ.

So, lets see what will happen.

The problem with AZ is that they don't really have a special focus in their network. They neither have a strong presence in Latin America, nor in Africa, North America or Asia. Integrating AZ into one carrier's network won't be that easy. And the fact that we are not talking about full ownership but only 49,9% of the company also makes thing delicate.
I really don't think buying AZ would be the smartest move for LH...they should rather focus on BD!

At this point I just don't know what would be best for AZ. Their daily loss is so huge that seeing them arise from the fire they've been in for so long, seems quite impossible and even more to find anyone who could save them.

Actually, I still can't see how Swiss is so good after the trouble they were in.

I'd go for AF/KL too... now I guess its just a matter of time.

I hope that the Italian govt has the good sense to offer it for sale without lots of strings attached. Nobody wants to buy it with the strings attached.
