Just reading in the daily newspaper here in Johannesburg that DL will commence a service between New York and Cape Town on June 4, 2008. Doesn't state if it will be a daily service but does say that the flight will stop off in Dakar and will be timed to link with the daily JNB-ATL service so that passengers from CTN can link with the flight to ATL and passengers from CTN can join the flight to NY. Great idea IMHO. Doesn't say what metal will be used either but I would presume 763.

Service is currently planned for 3x weekly with the 763ER. Intermediate stop will indeed be DKR, allowing for connections from the ATL flight. The inaugural is scheduled for June 3, 2008 from JFK, arriving in CPT on June 4.

I am so glad to see Delta do this. CPT is a small airport in a continent that no other US major has stepped foot in and to see Delta start flights there is great. Aren't there only 2-3 jetways at that airport? I was there last year and the domestic terminal was ground level so you took a bus out to the plane. Will Delta be allowed a jetway? CPT is a beautiful place, with so much to do. Any idea on the schedules?

The airport has a feel of one from the late 1950s and 60s. It's a great place. Friendly people.

This is true. I remember arriving there once and having to walk the full length of the ramp passing 6 or 7 Boeing 747s in a row. It was such a different perspective. I even took an excellent close-up of the undercarriage of the famous SAA "Ndizani" 747-300.

Have they changed the airport now? Does it have jetways? Also, have they renamed it as well? It used to be named after D.F. Malan....a really notorious figure in the history of Apartheid.

Guys I'm pretty sure I saw 2-3 jetways at the north (?) end of the airport in the international section. When were you guys last there? They are probably new.

I left CPT a few weeks ago and boarded the KLM 777 on a jetway and arrived 4 weeks earlier using a jetway.
South Africa is a beautiful place to visit and the local people are really nice. Hermanus is a must between August and December for the whale watching.

What's so 'cruddy' about 763s? They are the best widebody out there in my opinion. Only 1 chance of getting a bad seat, the middle seat. Look at SAA's A346's. The entire middle section is miserable no matter where you sit, middle seat or aisle. If you are in the one of the two middle seats, you still have to get over someone to get out, and in this case you only have the choice of one person. That aisle person is just as pissed because that same guy will be waking him up all night with his tiny bladder. On the 763, the middle seater has a choice between two people, and there is only one middle seat compared to two. A lot better than SAA's configuration for sure!

Delta also has free alcohol on it's South Africa flights. Amenity kits for coach passengers, clean cabins with leather seats, mid-flight snacks, and plentiful meals. Honestly, I can't see what you can complain about unless you are an IFE critic, and absolutely can't bear looking at those god-awful 'boxy' overhead bins.

What about DL using one of their new 777-200LR's direct CPT-JFK, thus eliminating a stop in DKR. I know that this would be skipping the ATL stop, but since it won't be daily they could run direct flights twice weekly while connecting flights on other scheduled days.

You beat me to it. V7 flies to Ziguinchor and Banjul, both interesting yet little talked about places.

Great to see DL, or any US airline for that matter, expanding internationally.

Alitalia and TAP also serve Dakar.

Actually, if you plot CPT-JFK on the great circle mapper, the direct track of 6775 nautical miles is within range of a 777LR, but there are two points at which it goes outside the 138 minutes ETOPS rating, one off the coast of Namibia and Angola, and one more at about 12-18 degrees north of the equator, midway between Puerto Rico and Dakar, Senegal.

As long as the 777's are 180 minutes ETOPs certified, it's possible...under ideal circumstances. Winds might make the northbound flight a bit close...

As I recall, though, Atlanta civic leaders lobbied for Delta's South Africa service to be routed through a West African country with full traffic rights on both segments. If they continue to route the flight through DKR, a simple switchover in DKR gives a JFK passenger the choice of a one-stop to either Cape Town OR Johannesburg, and the same with Atlanta.

Thanks PanAm!

What does Delta have to do to get the ETOPS rating up to 180 from 138? Also, is there a way to increase it above 180?

I don't know about extending ETOPS certification, but I know AA could probably print their own money if they could fly a 777 MIA-JNB-CPT-MIA - it too flies out of the 138 minutes ETOPS limits.

Delta is an ETOPS207 certified operator... but they can only utilize that on North Pacific and/or transArctic routings, and even then only on a case-by-case basis.

The USDOT prefers its carriers to maintain ETOPS120 or ETOPS120+15% operations over the Atlantic, though exceptions are allowed. They do allow ETOPS207 on S.Pacific routings now, though I'm not sure if anyone under their auspices is currently utilizing such.

A thread was started on 9/27 which announced DL's new routes. The routes mentioned in this thread-starter were also covered in the 9/27 thread.

We've had a couple of threads removed as duplicates because they were announcing DL routes that were already covered in that 9/27 thread.

Rather than deleting this thread, I'm going to lock it so that the posts will remain for reference. But please move the conversation back over to the original thread, which is:
