First off, this is an update to ATAIndy's original thread from a few months ago: RE: The Indiana Aviation Thread (by FWAERJ Aug 8 2007 in Civil Aviation)

And now, an airport-by-airport rundown of what's happened since August...

IND: The new terminal is being built, Cape Air is starting a base for intrastate service to EVV and SBN, Rolls-Royce is building a North American jet engine mechanic training center, and there's rumors that NW wants to start IND-AMS. And of course, FedEx traffic is still growing. But where's the long-rumored JetBlue flights to JFK?

SBN: Not much new besides Cape Air's new flights to IND.

FWA: On the passenger side, things are looking up, as G4 has added service to AZA and FLL. CommutAir should be upgrading CO Connection CLE service to Q200s soon, too. Don't be surprised if we see a New York City and/or Washington D.C. area airport in the near future. But in cargo, the Kitty Hawk hub is having a few troubles. Let's hope for the best...

EVV: Cape Air's flights to IND is the big news here... but I wouldn't be surprised if G4 starts service here soon (why haven't they already?).

GYY: Chicago's (possible) third airport wants IND service from Cape Air, too. But what about service to a hub on a real airline and not some fly-by-night public charter?

HUF: Is Delta Connection (Big Sky) service to CVG still in the works? I haven't heard much.

LAF: Will commercial service EVER return?

That's about it... any more comments, thoughts, or suggestions?

TZ has announced they are discontinuing MDW-LGA and MDW-DCA service. Sure, none of these flights are to/from Indiana, but TZ's headquarters is still here, so I guess it's relevant.

Another thread today mentioned that DL is starting flights from OWB-CVG. With OWB less than 50 miles from EVV, might this hurt business at EVV?

Cape Air may be a small airline flying small equipment, but they are not a fly-by-night company. They have been around for a while and have a good reputation.

Yes, LAF had service to STL as late as 2003/2004. The terminal is very small, but it would get the job done.


Also, regarding LAF service, IMHO ORD is the only airport that would have a shot at sustaining a commercial flight. The problem is that I fear a RJ is too much plane for the route.

That's a good idea, given that NW's focus city at IND has probably resulted in a lot of NW FF accounts near LAF.

Is there any way to find O/D stats for LAF?

Finally, I don't fully understand why, for instance, OWB gets EAS money, but LAF doesn't?

That's because LAF is too close to a "major airport" (in this case, IND) to receive EAS subsidies.

XJ tried that. Pulled out in 2003. But then again, that was before NW built up their IND focus city.

I know that, and I agree with you... Cape Air is a good, solid operator. What I was referring to when I meant "fly-by-night public charter" was Southeast, Hooters Air, SkyValue, etc. and not Cape Air... sorry for the miscommunication.

Two Indiana updates:

-Kitty Hawk Inc. (parent of Kitty Hawk Air Cargo) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today. Right now, they say that it will be "business as usual" at the FWA hub. But will the FWA hub face cutbacks or possibly closure? Who knows...

-Ticket sales for Cape Air's SBN-IND and EVV-IND services are ahead of expectations, and GYY-IND could be added sometime in 2008... let's hope for the best! More information here: http://www.insideindianabusiness.com/newsitem.asp?ID=25941
