Varig: Not Using Compass Emblem On Website Or Ads

I have noticed that Varig have dropped using the compass logo emblem on their website and also on advertising.
At the weekend they had ads in the newspapers for returning to LHR with no compass logo just the name Varig.

Is the compass logo now dead when the new livery comes alone supposedly later this month or next.

Does anyone have insight into the new scheme? and when it will be announced.

The compass and the "Brasil" were removed as a new scheme is being developed.

It is scheduled to be launched on Oct. 23rd, including a already painted 737. I prefer to wait and see, its only a week away!

I also noticed on their website that they're quoting prices in USD. Is that new?

I think is a good idea to use the name as the emblem, other companies like SAS, Coca-Cola and Easyjet do the same.

The compass is very distinctive of the Varig brand and is, in addition, a really nice emblem. The new livery'd better be good.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Droppping gold for orange? Hmmm...could that be to help RG identify with her new owners, Gol? I hope it's something classy and "Varig". Somebody's gotta have something to show us, guys!

I think they forgot to delete the reference to the "favicon"...the compass is still appearing in the web page Tab.

EXTREMELY BAD BUSINESS IDEA TO STICK A NEW LOGO ON A BAD PRODUCT.

VARIG shoud wait until their new product lives up to a new a image. otherwise signaling change and not delivering is a lie to a consumer that they wont forget and wont they afford VARIG another chance. we have been disappointed by the VARIG brand for too long. as a marketer i would wait to launch a new identity when there is a new VARIG- for real.

i love VARIG and want to see her fly again proundly and not trip up by being over zealous.

A part of me wonders if they would have been better off keeping the logo and changing the name.  confused

no way! you can change your color (scheme), but by changing the name you can ruin a lot, also you have to remember that Varig is the flag carrier of brazil

I thought that they are now a private company, no? In these days of free competition are there really many true "flag carriers" left?

For the record, I do not question or wish to diminish Varig's proud past, but clearly they have had well publicized issues in recent years and the point I was trying to make with my earlier comment is that the name might have more of a nostalgic significance for us A.netters than it has in a commercially viable sense from a marketing perspective to the current day general public. As a marketing director I can tell you that the ability to marry Varig's traditional compass logo and brand imagery to a newly (but perhaps similarly) named entity might allow it to convey the image a bright new future tied to the proud history of the past... and that might not be a bad thing from a commercial viability and marketing perspective.

VARIG has never been state owned.

I think that the title of "flag carrier" is honorary and symbolic of a country's representation without having to be state run. Varig has been ambassador of Brazil to countries as far as Japan and others and has been historically prominent in the aviation industry of the carioca country. That's what makes it the flag carrier, and that's why GOL decided to keep the name alive instead of rebranding it GOL International or something like that. TAM could become the next carrier, but it would take it a long time to be deserving of such an honour.

a "flag carrier" does not need to be 100% state owned, beeing the flag carrier is more symbolic, but still varig IS the flag carrier, so changing the name should be out of question

just think about, what if
e.g.
american airlines would be renamed to dutch airlines  Big grin

The compass by all likelyhood will be maintained, only restyled a little bit.

They say that the gold color will be replaced by a more "orangy" gold tone, if you will...something to connect Varig to its new owner, Gol.

I agree with you. But, in Varig's case, if you mean "bad product" by the quality of the planes they are flying now, you'd be 100% correct. But, if you include in "product" the service provided by ground and air staff, I'd say its a great product!

I've just flow Varig, international to FCO and back. Bad plane, but fantastic service. From my recent experience, TAM does not provide you the same level sympathy, effort and willingness from the staff to offer you a good service, not even close.

I know I remember Varig as a airline that had the newest planes as well as provided a level of service compared to the best and most traditional airlines in the World. If they for now can't offer you the newest planes, they are certainly trying to keep up their level of service.

There was an article online that I saw (Sorry, No link)
that showed a "hypothetical" livery for VARIG's new planes.
The "Orangy" color was not as strong as G3's orange, it was somewhat
more pastel if you guys know what I mean.

I say we wait until RG get's newer planes before we judge them.
It is obvious that their current fleet can't match what the competitors
have, but hey, that's what they have for now and it is better then
losing frequencies !

:D

There was an ad in yesterday's Folha de Sao Paulo from Varig. It was advertising their filght to London. There was no compass in the ad at all, except on the plane that was flying overhead in the ad, and it was faint.

I just found this article on the website of www.terra.com.br *** Varig to Change Image Tomorrow ***

Quoted and Translated

********************************************************************************************************************************************

Varig is going to present tomorrow, in Rio of January, its new visual identity, after 80 years with the star and the blue colors as their symbols. The main change will be the addition of orange to the image, the same color as the new owner of the air company, GOL.

********************************************************************************************************************************************

It gives no detail than that referred to above, I wonder if the star is going to bite the dust.

I think it would look good with an orange tail with the star in white and billboard VARIG in orange on the fuselage.

I suppose we will have to wait until tomorrow to see, rumour is that a B737 has been painted in the new scheme. It is supposedly being painted at VEM in Rio, anyone managed to get a glimpse !!!!

Anyone know at what time is the press conference?

It is saying that Flex is the 'old RG', which remained with only one 737-300 and should resume service by the end of the year on RIO-SSA-REC route.
