Urumqi Airport: Discounts To New Int'l Routes

Xinjiang Airport Group Co., Ltd. has issued preferential treatment to international airlines taking off from or landing at the Urumqi International Airport.

- A Chinese (or foreign) airline which opens an international airline in mid-Asia with a flying period of less than five hours, will enjoy free landings at the Urumqi International Airport in the first six months, and pay only 50 percent of the charge in the second six-month period and the full charge in the second year.

- A Chinese (or foreign) airline which opens an international route to Europe, Japan, the Republic of Korea and southeast Asia with a flying period of more than five hours, will enjoy free landing for the first year, and a 50 percent discount the following year


At the moment, the international carriers serving Urumqi are:

Ariana, Dragonair, Korean Air, Dalavia, S7, Azerbaijan Airlines, Uzbekistan Airways , Tajik Air and China Southern Airlines ( Almaty, Baku, Bishkek, Dushanbe, Islamabad, Jeddah, Khabarovsk, Moscow-Sheremetyevo, Novosibirsk, Sharjah, Tashkent, Tehran-Imam Khomeini ) .
.
And Domestic: Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Air, Shanghai Airlines, Shandong Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines and Sichuan Airlines.

Many airports offer discounts to new airlines and new destinations. Even established giants like Hong Kong has such a scheme running. Heathrow offers preferential slot allocations to new entrants.

Not unique to Urumqi.

I think there were rumours once that BA / BMED were to fly there via Ankara or something. But this never materialized. Urumqi is really very close to places like Almaty or Bishkek, so a flight could maybe be operated as a triangle, depending on traffic rights etc. Who would you bet on? Finnair? Lufthansa? Is there significant industry / commerce in Urumqi to justify flights there?

I can see airlines taking advantage of discounts to major airports. But, I would like to see what airlines want to serve Urumqi from Europe.

I can quite see the possibility of KLM being tempted into this market on a triangular route. They already operate several flights a week on the A332 into Almaty (ALA) in neighbouring Kazakhstan and Urumqi (URC) is only just over 500 miles away. With the discount landing fees it could be a useful way into a niche market - potentially even codesharing on some China Southern flights onwards in China.

The Japan one is limiting. Japan and China's bilateral is a little restrictive right now. But maybe something can be changed to make this happen. If it does, then maybe NH will have to get a few more 737-700 BBJs. JL though as the pet of the ruling party would go on this. Too bad UA and NW can't access this using their 5th freedoms...or can they?

Quite. I've backpacked acros Xinjiang, and I can't really see any potential for Europe-Urumqi flights... But maybe someone found something 'interesting' in the great big dusty desert...!  crazy

Oil, Oil, there is Oil and therefore "big" business. But this just in Wulumuqi, not in the rest of Xinjiang.

However, connecting in URC wouldn't be so stupid ... nice break from Europe to Hongkong etc. Anyway, don't think there will be a flight URC - Europe soon.

Anyway, yes, I suppose oil might be a filip to business traffic, depending upon who China permits to take part in exploration there, but I wouldn't have thought that the city itself is much of a pull for transiting visitors - it's not exactly a rich example of local indigenous culture... There might be some interest in flying into URC by some in order to travel along the old silk road, but that would hardly generate enough passenger traffic for an additional stop on an existing service.

Ironically Xinjiang itself is very rich in archeological sites, with a very corourful history going back long, long before the Chinese got there, but I wonder how many of those sites will be preserved intact if the hunt for oil is encouraged without restraint.

"Hainan Airlines began construction of a new base at its Urumqi hub that will feature a hangar, warehouses, catering facility, flight crew and office building and a maintenance facility. First phase of construction on the 153-acre site is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008. Hainan operates 13 routes within and from the Xinjiang region in northwest China. The carrier said it intends to operate routes to Central Asia and Eastern Europe from the airport."

I apologize, I'm just used to write pinyin transcriptions and didn't pay attention.

Just stay at the Kempinski or Sheraton for a few days and one notices that Urumqi (or Wulumuqi) is oil business. However, I doubt that there's a big market for foreigners/ foreign carriers or int'l routes.

BMED was due to start Urumqi last yeat but it never came off. I don't think it is on bmi's hitlist however. I think Turkish would be the best option for URC. Alternatively, Austrian or Lufthansa, who could route FRA-Astana-Urumqi, enabling Almaty to go daily non-stop.

KLM is the only European airline flying there, and that's 2-3 times weekly.... so not that promising, I believe.

I don't know how the loadings are, but the frequency does not reflect that the route is doing poorly, most carriers start up long hauls like that with just a few services a week, then increase to daily flights if there is further demand. Give it time, I'm sure one of the Dutch guys will be able to answer for sure though, there are several with a good insight to KLM and it's operations.
