Can someone explain to me what a Same day confirmed flight change is?

If I am flying Airline X, departing at 5pm, and there are flights earlier, say 6am, 7am, 8am etc etc, does this mean I can hope an earlier flight by paying a fee?

Thanks

The same-day confirmed option allows you to change your flight time on the same day of travel. Generally for a fee.

That's it. You pay a fee ($25-50 depending on the airline) and you get a confirmed seat on the earlier flight (or if you want a later flight, some airlines allow that as well). Generally you can only do these same-day confirms within 3 hours of the flight you want to take leaving.

Fare class permitting, I'm sure. On way back from LAX, I checked in just after midnight, day of flight. I was allowed the option to change to an earlier or later flight for a $25 fee. I called reservations the afternoon before and would have had to pay fare difference to make the change. My original flight wasn't until about 4:00 pm. So I don't think 3 hours matters, just has to be same calendar day when you make the change.
