Why The Shorter Seats On Delta Domestic 767-300s?

I have actually wondered why did Delta install shorter seats on the domestic 767-300s vs. those on Delta's other aircraft.

I believe that this type of seat was first introduced on the 767-200s, and then was later featured on the domestic 767-300s. The 727s and L-1011-1s were also retrofitted with this type of seat. I am not sure whether their age has anything to do with that, as many of Delta's 757s and MD-88s that were delivered about the same time as the domestic 767-300s have seats that are taller than those on the domestic 767-300s. It's about time that Delta will be installing new slimline seats on them, which of course will be taller than what they currently feature.

Comparison - domestic 767-300 vs. 757 vs. MD-88:

I've noticed the seats on the 763's on international runs are also shorter seat backs. Very uncomfortable on a long flight (I'm tall) Until Delta gets some more comfortable seats I'm giving them a miss.

Actually, they are taller than those on the domestic 767-300s. I assume you mean shorter than the seats on other airlines. However, some of the newer 767-300ERs have the 767-400ER-type seats with winged headrests.

The bigger question I have is why no PTV on the 767-300ER (international fleet). I understand on the older aircraft the wiring is the issue (we had same problem at AZ with the older 763ERs in the fleet); but the bulk of DLs long haul fleet is the 763ER (yes, the 777s and 764s have the PTV). This would put DL at a significant competitive disadvantage against other carriers who have this product in Y class on their aircraft.

As for the question of the shorter seat, I believe (and this is an opinion based on very old information...so take it with the appropriate grain of salt)...the seats are simply being recovered and not replaced. The original cloth seats on the 763s were pretty short, but wider (18 in vs 17.5 on the 764). That said, I do agree having flown both the 763 and the 764 that the seats on the 764 were more comfortable (this is pre refit) even though the pitch was slightly less than on the 763 (at the time I was flying them...which has been a couple of years now.

Anyone from DL on this forum care to comment?

In any case, DL is doing the right things (the 763 issue notwithstanding) in refitting the aircraft with slim line seats and especially on the 757 overwater aircraft, PTV in Y class.

Yes, in comparison to other airlines they seem quite a bit shorter. Those winged headrest seats look a lot better, will Delta be installing them on all the international fleet?

The bigger question I have is why no PTV on the 767-300ER (international fleet).

Its due to weight concerns. Many of DL's upcoming new routes such as TLV-Africa and Africa-JFK, as well as the existing ATH-ATL, push the 763ER in terms of range, mainly due to the headwinds. DL would rather not have PTV's than take pax/cargo restrictions on flights. After all, they must be doing something right given their profit that was recently announced, which is largely due to success on TATL routes that are flown with the PTV-less 763's.
The seats themselves on DL's 767-300ER's are relatively comfortable, but indeed seem a bit short and lack a headrest, unlike the 764/772. But they're comfortable for everything except for the head (or at least the old cloth ones were, as I haven't flown on one w/ the leather interior yet).

Most likely if Delta orders the 787, they will feature PTVs. Also, as I stated earlier, some of the newer 767-300ERs have the 767-400ER-type seats with winged headrests. Some 757s and 737-800s also used to have seats with winged headrests, but they have all been removed. Hopefully the 777-200LRs get seats with winged headrests.

Unfortunately not; as of now only the 767-400ERs, 777-200ERs, and a few of the newest 767-300ERs will feature them. The new slimline seats that the 737-800s and domestic 767-300s are getting do not feature winged headrests. No word as of yet on the 777-200LRs.

Do a search. That topic has been beaten to death and then some.

I knew this sounded vaguely familiar, so I did a search.

Not to be one of those "do a search, this has been discussed before" type of people.

But this has been discussed before.

Whoops! I meant JFK to Africa, just a typo. So no, you obviously didn't miss anything.

I'm 99.9% sure that the 787's will get PTV's with AVOD in all classes. I'm also sure that the 788's will have winged headrest, maybe the 783's if they order them. Same goes with the 77L's in terms of the winged headrests, I'm sure. I never knew that some of their 767's had those headrests, after all you said it was on some of the newer GE CF6birds; the DL 763 flights I've been on (only 3) were on the early '90's Pratt PW4060 birds, with the one I flew on last year still having the Ron Allen livery (N175DN). Does anyone know if any of the 757's are getting the slimline seats that will be on the domestic 763's/738's?
