Back when DL had a big operation at DFW, where did they fly to? Did the fall of DL at DFW effect AA in anyway?

In 2001 until the 9/11 attacks Delta and Delta Connection served the following destinations nonstop from it's DFW hub:

ABQ, AEX, AMA, ATL, AUS, BTR, BHM, BOS, CHS, CVG, COS, CAE, DEN, ELP, XNA, FLL, GSO, IAH, HOU, JAN, JAX, ILE, LFT, LAS, LIT, LAX, SDF, LBB, MEM, MOB, MLU, MGM, BNA, MSY, LGA, JFK, OAK, OKC, ONT, SNA, MCO, PHX, PDX, RDU, RNO, SLC, SAT, SAN, SFO, SAV, SEA, SHV, TPA, TXK, TUS, TUL, DCA, PBI, ICT

If you'd be interested I could check one of my old timetables in order to find out if and what the events on 9/11 changed on destinations served from DFW. I can't remember when exactly DL started dismantling it's DFW hub and if some destinations were dropped right after 9/11 (and never resumed).

I remember that until some point in the mid 90's DL served HNL nonstop from DFW, also until the closure of the FRA hub in 1997 DL offered a daily DFW-FRA service.

I flew FAI-ANC-SEA-DFW-EWR and back on DL a couple of times back in the early 90's. Nothing like flying on DL from Alaska to the Northeast via the Deep South....... spitting distance from the Mexican border, relatively speaking. It was a good way to build up extra miles though. Texans never seemed like us long haired shaggily dressed individualistic Alaskans. I got quite a few stares at times when changing flights at DFW. The old DL terminal (E) at DFW looks pretty empty nowadays. Who uses it? DL for their handful of flights to SLC, ATL and CVG, AS, CO.... who else?

Is the small satellite terminal off of Terminal E still there? I was checking out DFW on Google Maps the other day and it is an old satellite image from when DL still had a hub at DFW. The Satellite terminal had a mix of DL mainline and Express aircraft parked at the gates. I saw a couple of DL L-1011's parked at the E Terminal as well.



I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Believe it or not, post-9/11 saw a significant expansion in destinations and flights on Delta from DFW; however, mainline departures declined significantly as CRJ's replaced (and in some cases augmented) mainline service. Fall 2003 saw non-stop service on Delta (with additions in italics) to:

ABQ, AEX, AMA, ATL, AUS, BTR, BHM, BOS, CHS, ORD, CVG, COS, CAE, GTR, CMH, CRP, DAB (3 weekly), DEN, DTW, ELP, FLL, VPS, GSO, GPT (5 weekly), HOU, IAH, HSV, IND, JAN, JAX, MCI, TYS, LFT, LAS, LEX, LIT, LAX, SDF, LBB, MLB (1 weekly), MEM, MSP, MOB, MLU, MGM, BNA, MSY, LGA, XNA, OAK, OKC, ONT, SNA, MCO, PFN (5 weekly), PNS, PHX, PDX, RDU, SLC, SAT, SAN, SFO, SAV, SEA, SHV, TLH, TPA, TUS, TUL, DCA, PBI, ICT.

Emblematic of the schedule change was DFW-AUS going from 4 mainline and 1 RJ to 8 RJ's, DFW-MSY from 3 mainline to 8 RJ's, and DFW-SNA going from 2 MD-90's to 2 CRJ-700's.

The handful of dropped routes included JFK, ILE, RNO, and TXK -- and the dropping of TXK & ILE were tied to the phase-out of ASA EMB-120 service at DFW. AFAIK, TXK was primarily kept due to the EMB-120 maintenance being done there, and runway length was an issue for RJ's at ILE. JFK returned in early 2004 and DFW-GUC was also added then. If memory serves, DFW-BPT was added in 2004 shortly before the decision was made in late summer 2004 to close the DFW hub effective January 2005.

The last few times I connected through DFW were positively eerie, as Delta had already started to gut unused gate areas and a once-busy hub (during peak times) had perhaps 15-20 departures, mostly on RJ's.

yep. Then they closed it and opened SLC. Then they closed that and opened LAX. Then they closed that too.

It's unused and closed--jetbridges are removed, though most of that happened when ASA took over the terminal. No gates are in use. There's a gate blocking the way to the escalators that would take you down to the moving sidewalks to "Easy Street." There are also complete Delta timetables for 1979 and 1983.

This may show you some of the various Delta operations out of DFW at different times.

Having lived in Dallas during the 80's and 90's, I saw the fortunes of Delta come and go at DFW. IIRC, at their peak, they flew in excess of 250 daily departures, PRE-regional jet days, all mainline. They had various EMB's and EM2's from ASA (or thinking further back, various a/c from Rio), but still a hefty number of mainline departures. I used the satellite numerous times for mainline. The original plan called for a second satellite at the opposite corner of 4E, but economics and the reality of the congestion it would cause with aanother aairline next door killed that idea.

Yes. American's biggest competitor in the Dallas/Ft. Worth market disappeared, and American added nearly 100 flights to compensate. American's expansion in the Southeast wouldn't have been possible without Delta's pullout. Most of the markets American has added since 2005 in the Southeast from DFW were Delta Connection markets.

Once the last vestiges of the Wright Amendment go into effect, WN will be AA's biggest competitor, albeit from a different airport; DAL.

Since July 1, 1990, DL has still managed to keep 11 n/s flights to ATL daily (8 on 757's). I like seeing an occasional DL 757 instead of AA 757's flying over on approach every once in a while. How many gates does DL still have at DFW?

I like seeing an occasional DL 757 instead of AA 757's flying over on approach every once in a while

They RON 3 757's right now, quite different seeing 3 757 on the Term E ramp.

Starting in December and thru January...no more scheduled B757's into DFW. Hopefully next spring DL will
be bringing back the B757's. DL will be flying a B767-300 in for the Jets charter at Thanksgiving...those are
always nice to see in DFW.

Yes I have found memories of flying one of the original Delta Connection carrier RIO Airways with its visual yellow aircraft. I have flown the BE1900 and Dash 7 aircraft from Killeen to DFW many times. At the new Killeen airport (GRK) they have mini museum dedicated to Rio Airways.

Does anyone remember the traffic jams at DFW in the late 80s when every DL and AA gate emptied out for the 5-6pm afternoon rush?
