Looks like Duluth couldn't live up to the YX expectations. Is anyone surprised? The service only lasted nine months.

Hard to say ... on one hand, I'm kind of surprised, because the route seemed promising at the start. On the other hand, however, I'm really not, because the route will most likely be "replaced" by codesharing with NW to MSP.

At least this frees up a couple more FRJ runs to go elsewhere. Wonder if this is the ray of hope for RHI and MKG.

You've got Allegiant to Las Vegas twice weekly.

Midwest might have come into the market but they didn't offer any type of fare relief to other markets. Flying into Duluth is still just damned expensive to a great deal of places. Many of the locals just save themselves the trouble and drive down to Minneapolis, paying significantly less while still paying a great deal on the airfares out of there.

We've been screaming for a jet for awhile. I know MBL wants to elminiate an MKG stop off of one of their flights (and I think the new ZK bid allows for that). Optimally, eliminating the stop on 1042 could get us a kickoff jet flight. The early flights always do well for both us and NW over here.

I don't know much about RHI other than the diverted flight that came here from there was pretty full. Their flight schedules between YX and NW also seem similar to ours, so maybe a jet would work there as well.

With the 12/1 schedule change they are down to three lines of BE1 flying. Ironwood no longer has an overnight, and RHI is down to 2x/day. Total MKE Beech departures go from 14 to 13.

The lines appear to be:

ESC - MKE - CWA - MKE - ESC - MKE - ESC - IMT - MKE - GRB - MKE - ESC

MBL - MKG - MKE - IMT - MKE - MBL - MKG - MKE - RHI - IWD - RHI - MKE - MKG - MBL

IMT - MKE - RHI - IWD - RHI - MKE............................MKE - MKG - MKE - GRR - MKE - IMT

That third line arrives MKE from RHI at 12:15pm and doesn't leave again until 5:45 to MKG. I suspect with this gap they are able to fly the weekday schedule with the equivalent of five crews rather than six.

Remember early this year when Midwest pleanned for Great Lakes to take ovr the BE1 flying by summer? Apparently it's not clear which summer that will actually be. In the mean time I can't imagine this BE1 flying is breaking even. Although they are receiving subsidy, conditions worsened since the proposal was issued. Traffic has dropped off in the UP (and in much of Michigan) over last year, fuel is high, and fixed costs spread over only 2 1/2 lines of flying makes operational costs higher, too.

From what I had heard, with the new "temporary" EAS contract Skyway is flying under, they're actually making quite a bit of money maintaining the routes until Lakes takes over.

FSD maybe? they have a few D328's freed up, why not try 2x to MKE. I know it might make some sense, but it could really increase the amount of passengers here, and have FSD Passengers get away from flying NW and UA (and DL).

I thought YX was doing well on this route since not to long after they announced it they added a 2nd daily flight and then I can't remember if they added a 3rd or not but yeah. That led me to think that this route was doing alright, but I guess not.

A bit of history for you as to whether or not we can support a jet:

Up until about a couple years ago, MKG's flight schedule consisted of the following (the times are MKG arrivals and departures only:

1042 (MBL-MKG-MKE), arr 6:50am / dep MKG 7:05am
1404/1405 (MKE-MKG-MKE) arr 10:45am / dep 10:55am
1403 (MKE-MBL-MKG-MKE) arr 2:05pm / dep 2:20pm
1049/1413 (MKE-MKG-MKE) arr 5:05pm / dep 5:15pm
1411 (MKE-MKG-MBL) arr 11:10pm / dep 11:25pm

The summer we had that schedule, the four MKE departures were packed to the gills with the best loads the station had ever seen. That following winter began the first of the Beech reductions. As a result, 1049/1413 was moved to an 8:05/8:15pm arrival and departure, which killed our loads on that flight as there were little to no connections. The next summer, the three remaining daytime flights were still packed to the gills.

About a year ago, when the AD went out on the Beech 1900s for inspections of wing spar cracks, two of our Beeches were pulled off the line for maintenance and a number of flights in the system were pulled off the line until further notice, including 1404/1405.

That flight never was reinstated, but they did eventually move 1049/1413 back to a 7:05/7:15pm time, which opened that flight up to connections to the 7:30 block of departures from MKE. This past summer, the two daytime flights have still done really well, and 1413 I would say averages half-full loads outbound.

However, as of late, with 1042 and 1403 being tied to MBL, we've seen alot of our seats taken by MBL traffic. Often times, MBL passengers comprise half or more of the flight, which is impressive for an EAS city. Great for MBL, but a challenge for MKG passengers to get any seats on the daytime flights.

As long as our flights are well-timed, the demand exists. MBL wants to eliminate and MKG stop on one of their flights...such a move would open up MKG to a better-timed FRJ flight (preferably a morning kick-off). Obviously, MBL's schedule is a stumbling block in getting us the flights we want at the times we want, but if we could get a morning kick-off jet flight and a late-afternoon (5:00-ish) jet flight, I think the loads would support it.

Midwest does very well here, the only thing holding us back is the number of seats going out of here.
