Boeing 787 Delay's Impact On Co

With the announced B787 delay being said, how does this affect Continental's future route expansion? They were probably
banking on the 2009 delivery and if a further delay were to develop, would more B767/B777 aircraft need to be acquired as a stop gap measure?

It should have little to no effect. The delivery schedule is said to be compacted by the EIS delay, but not cascading like the A380 delay. At least that's what they say now. So while the plane will be late into service, it will still be ramping up and delivering en masse in 2009. This is similar to what happened with the 747 originally. It was a little late into EIS, there was a problem that held up some other deliveries by a few months, but in short order (within 1 year?) Boeing had caught up to it's original schedule of deliveries.

By the end of 2009 they will have delivered all the planes they planned to deliver by the end of 2009 (minus I think 3?), so it might be a month or two but may not even be that. And there have been a few cancelations and slight deferments over the last year, so those might account for the difference.

BCA was not planning on delivering a lot of planes in 2008. And CO wasn't taking any until April or May 2009 IIRC. I think they will still get them then.

Again, assuming no more problems with the program.

You are correct. Unless there is another delivery delay CO will receive it's 787s on schedule.

This is from our Sept. 6th DNU:

I'm sure the fine folks at CO were all over the used/new plane market as soon as Open Skies was announced and they fully have there options laid out. The 787 delay will only increase the probability of them making a move earlier.

With that being said, where will CO get the two 777's for EWR>PVG in March 2009? With LHR, they will again be stretching the fleet to provide and additional widebody service from IAH (3 flights vs. 2) in 2008. CO has one of the best utilized 777's fleets in the world due to some pretty crafty scheduling at EWR. Many route require 777 service due to length (EWR to HKG, PVG, PEK, NRT and IAH NRT), competition (IAH/EWR>LHR) or volume/profit (EWR>TEL). Something will have to give by 29 March 2009.

In the 10k this month, CO said (paraphrasing) "they would be reviewing fleet options and consider additions if available at reasonable prices." Not sure if there are any 772 or 767's out there that would a) be reasonably priced and b) meet CO's spec. In the spring delivery of the 2 new 772's, CO stated these were the last 772's. In my mind, what's the downside of a 10 year lease on a few 772's to be delivered late 2008/early 2009 if Boeing can accomodate? The lease end could coordinate w/the delivery 787 ship # 50 in 2018 and be returned then (assumes 5 more 787s per year in years 2014-2018).

My guess is that CO will likely closely at available secondhand aircraft, and may not be averse to taking on 777As (-200/-300), 763s, or even a sizeable fleet of 343s (if of a fleet size that would allow CO to transition, say, all of its IAH 777 flying, and if Airbus would provide the training and a good total care-type package).

I seriousl;y doubt you would see a 343 in CO colors...ever.

In the grand scheme of things I'd bet the planners at CO (and others) hedged their bets and padded the expected delivery schedule of 787's by a few months. I know I would have.

This is the very reason CO held off on earlier delivery slots. They expected some bumps in the road for the program and decided others (like NW) could do most of the work smoothing things out before CO got behind the wheel.

Currently CO flies 767-400s from;

Honolulu:
Guam 1 daily- Houston 2xs daily- Los Angeles 1 daily- Nagoya 1 daily- Newark 1 daily

Guam-
Honolulu 1 daily- Tokyo Narita 2xs daily.
