I would have thought that the passenger numbers between India and China would have been a lot higher- at least enough to fill a 737. This really shocks me! Guess it just shows my ignorance!

Then consider me ignorant also. WOW, this announcement reminds me fondly of many US CRJ flights. I guess we know what direction Chinese aviation is headed in the future.

They don't have the best relations, but there is promise for routes between the two to be quite successful. SOOO, the thing is, China to India is one thing...Kunming to Kolkata is another...not the biggest cities in either country...If it were Shanghai to Mumbai, that's one thing.

Jeez, a red-eye in a CRJ, that could be the aviation equivalent to hell! I know it's a shortish flight, but factor in the time difference and it's not going to make for the best night.

You are correct that they don't have the greatest of relations; however, nowadays it's all about business instead of ideology.

Kolkotta (Calcutta) sadly has for the most part seen the boom in high tech and travel bypass that region. Airlines are expanding as fast as they can to Delhi, Mumbai (Bombay), and Bangalore...but who flies into Kolkotta for business?

At least this flight is a start.

Yep, thus the promise.

Very few people...but I still have to know, why Kunming? Sure, it's an MU focus city, but...MU operates CRJ200LRs, which could reach all of their other focus cities...for instance, Shanghai (2131 mi away...LRs have a range of about 2300 mi).

Skywest was doing a TUS-ATL red-eye in the summer on a CR9. More comfortable than a CR1/2, but still a CRJ.

What an awful schedule, what is with a whole bunch of flights in India arriving late at night/early morning and leaving early morning?

That's one of the effects when a big country like China only has one time zone. Creates some strange schedule differences in each direction to/from points in other countries, especially from more westerly points in China. Much the same as if all of Canada used YYZ time while the USA had its current time zones. There would be a 3 hour time difference between YVR and SEA. Any other country covering as much longitutde as China would have at least 3 or 4 time zones.

It's not like there is a superhighway to drive between Kunming and Calcutta either.

It might take days on the ground on donkeys for all I know! Jet speed might open a new market here.

Why the hell are they flying to Kolkata? I'm from that area, evertime I go to India I go through there. Its not one of the shining cities of India, like Bangalore or Mumbai. It doesnt make sense whatsoever, Kunming isnt the most "amazing" city in China either, I cant think of any read for O&D traffic between the two cities.

From what I have heard the flight was to use a 73G not a CRJ, I know someone going on the inaugural flight!

anyone else notice the concorde like times of the MG-CCU segment? It arrives in Kolkata (23:40) 10 minutes before it leaves Kunming (23:50).

I know this is due to the one time zone in China, but it's kind of funny to think that this means the CRJ will now share a title with the Concorde (arriving before leaving).

Really? A lot of people like Kunming a lot, and I look forward to going there someday. But it's not one of the largest business cities certainly. Maybe they are looking for regional ties to India with nearby provinces. There aren't many such ties now, though.
