I realize this might be somewhat of a vague question, 'best' being a relative term, but what would you say is the best long-range airliner?
I'm more interested in being able to service a large amount of fields, excellent range, and good fuel efficiency, rather than size and passenger capacity.
So far I figure the A340-200 or the upcoming 500, but I'd like to hear what you guys have to say.

From my experiences, I would say the 777. First, I like the design...and you can't beat those engines! The seating config is alright, as long as you're not the guy in the middle! And the range...doesn't get much better than that. Keep in mind that I haven't flown Airbus long range...

I like the 777 too, but there's something about having 4 engines instead of just 2 going long haul over the Pacific.

The A340-500 is great. And as Matt D asks for a comparable whisky, I'd recommend a wee drop of Chivas to accompany him on his flight.... Or a single malt. LHR stocks quite a few great brands....

I would say that the A345 is better than the A342.
The A342 has a better fuel-economy than A345 but A345 has a longer range, and as you say "there's something about having 4 engines instead of 2 going long haul over the Pacific", couldn't say it better myself.
