The IL 86 has been banned from flying in Swiss Airspace and landing at Swiss airports by the Swiss Aviation Addministration (OFAC). Random checks were carried out on an Aeroflot (SU) IL86 at Geneva Airport (GVA). The Aeroflot IL86 did not have a Collision Avoidance System (or it wan't working)
The IL86 is a quite frequent visitor to GVA with the many ski charters from Russia operated by both Aeroflot and Atlant-Soyouz.
The ban will start next week. Aeroflot has been given 1 weel to sort out the problem.
BTW GVA broke it's passenger record on Saturday the 6th of January with 44 000 passengers in one day.

Why would you ban one type of aircraft if it was only one particular airline that was not up to date on it's systems. Are the Swiss making the assumption that all Il86 are deficient of these systems.

I suspect that all this "CIS planes are poorly maintaned" thing roots in the very mentality of people who live in countries concerned, i.e. ex-USSR. They too often seem to think that God will spare them and don't devote that much attention to safety.
I don't see the situation improving in near or even "medium-range" future.

Hey,
Geneva has a daily Aeroflot Airbus A310 service.
It is just the ski charters that are operated with IL 86s. Up to 3 of them can arrive on one Saturday!
