Emirates have expressed their desire to serve Stuttgart and Berlin Tegel for some time now.
So far their request has been denied by the German ministry for transportation under pressure from LH.
Lufthansa themselves have of course no intention to fly from Berlin or Stuttgart to Dubai but rather use their hub in FRA for DBX flights under their logo.
So far EK serves FRA,MUC,HAM and DUS with twice daily flights.

HAM is just daily, but then again daily to DXB and JFK.
It has been quiet for a while now, last thing one heard was that there would be talks about granting EK more rights.
I guess sooner or later they will be allowed to come, but who knows when that day comes...

Quoting Avianca (Reply 3): it the DL 767 makes it to ATL
From what I have heard, the DL B763 is weight restricted in summer depending on weather. Sometimes it even has to use the runway in the opposite direction compared to the other traffic, which of course is a major disruption at this airport operating its single runway rather close to max capacity during times of the day.
DL's B763 currently is the biggest regular visitor at STR when disregarding military traffic of the USAF.
An additional heavy departing around 1400h when having to use the runway in opposite direction, too, would use up quite a number of slots ...
Also: Would STR's terminal building be able to handle the pax of a daily A330 to DXB w/o any siginificant improvements ? During my last visit in August this year, I found each of the check-in halls not quite up to the standard that one would expect from an airport that intends to play in the *major* league having handled 8,880,411 pax January to October 2007.
Which of the 8 contact gates would be able to handle a A330 - and would this gate be available from around 1200 to 1400h ?

The Qatar Airways flight seems to do quite well, don't know the exact numbers but the last time I was at TXL there was quite a line at check-in filled with German backpackers probably heading to places beyond Qatar like India and SE Asian.
Of course they are only flying with an A319 but given Emirates success with filling A330's from smaller European destination a TXL route would probably work fairly well for them. How come Qatar was able to start their service? I guess LH didn't feel too threatened by a flight with just a A319.

LH codeshares with QR (at least to DOH), whereas EK is pure competition.

*backpackers* (no harm to this group of people intended) might *fill" a plane, but they not necessarily are a source for an airline to get a good revenue as they tend to use (more or less) deeply discounted air fares.
This is compared to business people flying in Coach paying full fare or only slightly discounted fares.
