Can someone please explain? My aunt works for AA and is giving me a pass for graduation. So I figured I would try to use it to get to Australia.
Having seen the AA route map, I thought I could get a trip to NRT and just fly south. But when you price it, it costs almost the same as just flying from JFK to NRT! Why is that??! It just doesn't make sense.
Could anyone please advise me of a cheaper route to SYD? It would have to be from an airport served by AA. Or where I can look? I appreciate your help. And just email me with any info too! Thanks

If you are allowed to use codeshare flights the QF flight from JFK to SYD is the go.

My Father is a pilot for AA, and I go to school in FL so I find my self "non rev" alot. First of all, I have found that alot of time D3 Prices are often higher than that of regular priced fares for confirmed pax. I have seen JFK to LHR lower than what is charged for D3. From what I have heard AA Employees allowed for higher D3 prices, for the waiving of Non rev fees for employees who have been there for more than 5 yrs that fly coach. Now I don't know how much u know about non reving on AA. But here's a run down. An Employee has Unlimited D2 which can be used for personal travel for employee, spouse, and the imediate family. They also a bank of D3 which can be used for Anyone. I'm afraid to tell you that Australia isn't possible on a D3 pass. Flying on oneworld partners requires you to be a D2.

What type of aircraft does AA fly non-stop from JFK to NRT?

AA does not fly JFK-NRT. They have the authority but no NRT slots since they were allocated to cargo carriers like Polar Air.

The higher D3 prices were not a trade off for free coach travel. The higher (too high IMHO) D3 costs have been in effect for a couple years while the free (domestic) D2 charges have only been in effect for about 3 months. The unlimited D2 passes are limited to the employee, spouse and their dependents. The employees parents also travel D2, however, they do not have an unlimited supply as their D2 passes are drawn from the same bank of passes that D3 passes are drawn from. Basically you have a bank of passes that you can give to anyone and whether they are D2 (parents) or D3 makes no difference. Flying on oneworld partners is not possible for "D3" passengers and are regulated by specific carriers on who can fly using "D2" passes. For example, I believe that an AA employee can fly on BA but the employee's parents may not.
