Yes Air Uganda have introduced introductory fares of USD 169 return and USD 95 oneway on all their routes - NBO/EBB DAR-EBB JRO-EBB and JUB-EBB.

Their IATA code is U7. Was wondering if anyone in the travel industry can check if this Airline is there in the GDS. In other words Can Travel Agents book and issue tickets for this Airline on the NBO/DAR - EBB route? Or do they have an online based booking and ticket issuance system similar to ones operated by Zambian Airways, Swazi Express, Fly 540 Kenya.....

Great. That means they compete with SA and KQ [via NBO] on this sector which means prices should come down from the $700 odd currently charged for a 4 hour flight! Any indication of their planned frequency? SA currently flies four times weekly to EBB.

SA AIRLINK will cease its operations on the Johannesburg–George route from mid-January 2008 due to pressure on the route as a result of a capacity supply and demand imbalance.

Airlink has decided to use its capacity on other routes instead such as on the Cape Town–George and Cape Town–Nelspruit/Kruger/Mpumalanga routes.

Who knows. It could be that Yemen wants it's flag carrier to take advantage of it's ideal location as a transit point between Africa and Asia, even if it has a poor product and Yemen is viewed with caution in most of East Africa.

Will SunAir shine again?
SUNAIR Holdings Limited %u2013 the company that plans to resurrect SunAir as a Cape Town-based international airline %u2013 is negotiating a listing on the London Stock Exchange and has made an offer for an existing aviation operation in South Africa, says ceo, André Shaban.

The company intends to announce its plans before the end of March next year once all financial matters have been finalised, he told TravelHub. He said the reasons for wanting to list in the UK rather than in South Africa were that the UK market was 100 times bigger than South Africa. He also claimed the British and Europeans supported the transport sector and that similar companies to SunAir had opened their listing at 30p. He said support for SA companies was also expected ahead of 2010.

Shaban said negotiations for the purchase of the existing aviation company were %u201Cgoing well%u201D. %u201CI can't say anything more at this stage. I initially expected to make an announcement in early December, but there were delays from the UK. I will make an announcement when everything is finalised, which should be before the end of March next year.%u201D

He confirmed that the company had secured %u201Cat least R1,5bn%u201D in equity investment and that it had concluded a partnership with BEE company Molo-Moya.

According to its website, the business plan will involve an airline operating international and regional passenger and cargo flights from Cape Town; an airline maintenance operation; a ground handling organisation; an aviation training academy and an asset company. Also according to the website, SunAir had a meeting with representatives of Boeing, who had %u201Cpromised general aviation and technical advice and support for our efforts and indicated that they will assist us in our further developments%u201D.

They capture a lot of traffic ex Europe to Asia and Africa. A surprising amount actually. They don't and likely never will compete with the other Gulf Carriers but they do serve a niche market. They have an established network of Arab/Muslim ticket agents in Europe especially France that push their tickets. IY still show Arabic prayers etc before take-off which appeals to the more religious Muslims living in the EU. Try booking IY around the xmas break from Europe to say Doha. You will struggle! Now if only they could do something about SAH.

IY has a far better product than many (most?) African airlines so I think your comment is a little out of line. Sure it's not as polished as it could be but they boast excellent crew and FAs, a respectable and broad network, new planes amongst other things.
