News, chart, profile, more

GOL 26.93, +2.18, +8.8%) , the parent of Brazil's low-cost airlines GOL Transportes Aereos and VRG Linhas Aereas, said that VRG and Delta Air Lines have signed a partnership deal. Beginning this month, passengers of both airlines can purchase tickets to all destinations served by VRG and Delta Air Lines.

It's starting to look like Varig is slowly moving towards SkyTeam.

This is interesting news. With a strong parent company like GOL and dual-class service in both short and long haul flights, the new Varig seems like a good candidate to join an international alliance. With JJ moving towards Star Alliance, and RG moving towards SkyTeam, it seems like AA and its oneworld friends will be left out partner-less in Brazil.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

SKYTEAM needs an airline in Southern Latin America, Copa is good for northern Latin America. Brazil is the one market an alliance needs an airline just fro its size. Sao Paulo itself is huge plus all service to Europe can be fed from the neighboring countries which have little or no service to Europe or the USA & Canada.

No, it doesn't. Airlines have interline agreements with dozens of airlines. AA and DL have interline agreements. AA and SAA, etc., etc.

All it looks like is that GOL likes to brag about interlining agreements more than others.

Interesting news considering merging talks between Delta and United. Sky Team and Star! If a merger actually happens what alliance will represent Delta and United. It was said that the name in that event probably would be United!!!!

I agree Mark, but the use of the word "partnership" in the article plus the unusual fanfare for what would otherwise be a very common interline agreement could suggest something more, don't you think? And an officer from DL was recently quoted with saying that they were looking for non-aligned maj

Donzilasse..... If and when ( and I pray will not happen) that the 2 airlines merge. It has already been said that Delta and all of it brands would take on the name of United. That includes their FF, Lounge rooms, everything that has DL on it will be rebranded to UA. Which does not make sense, because DL is repainted and upgrading all their aircraft and adding flights overseas like crazy and making money doing it.

I suppose when it comes to domestic Brazilian feed, AA is perhaps banking on potentially being able to fly to all of the major points with its own metal in the next few years, rather than depending on a partner. As there isn't any other U.S. airline that is capable of penetrating as far into Brazil as AA can from Miami, AA may feel that it's not worth it to get into bed with a Brazilian carrier now only to find in 3-5 years that it can fulfill most of the Brazil network needs on its own.

Why not? It keeps their name in the papers.
