Hi, I just booked a trip from Sydney to Edinburgh next Oct and I am worried about the connection at LHR. I arrive on QF31 at 0640 T4 and depart on BA1438 at 0855 at T5. Do I need to collect my bags and go through immigration, and do you think I have been given enough time? I'd appreciate your thoughts

QF is supposed to be moving from T4 to T3 by next October. I believe all oneworld carriers other than BA not already in T3 will be moving there eventually. Some BA flights will also be using T3. I expect the date for the moves isn't yet final which is probably why QF may still be showing T4 in their schedules for October 2008.

QF press release from 2006 re their planned move to T3:

And current BA website info on T5 and related T3 info:

BA excerpt:

By October 2008, Terminal 3 will be home to British Airways flights to Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney, Madrid, Barcelona, Helsinki, Lisbon, Nice and Algiers, together with all GB Airways services and codeshare flights with Iberia, Qantas and Finnair.

As a friendly reminder, to avoid an unnecessary coronary, I always leave myself five hours connection in any city, if at all possible - Give time for delays in immigration or whatever, and security lines. You should be aware that airport security will be very tight and rightly so (providing us with safer skies to fly in). If you have the means financially, and change fees won't set you back too much, it would be worth to stay longer at LHR and connect more comfortably, than to worry about whether or not you will make it. This is my advice.

Personally, MIA is by far the most horrendous experience, but sometimes you gotta give in. I learned to go by the books and give myself even 7-8 hours connection in between flights - if possible. Going through security connecting at NRT is the next difficult task, but not impossible. Even connecting to the same airline (as in the case of NW), going through security is an added inconvenience.

Next year, I will go through LHR for the first time since 1981. I was a wee lad then. I will get off Aer Lingus from Dublin. and arrive into LHR. I will plan to stay the night just so I can catch QF 30 to HKG the next day. I'll see. I could be flying BA at late night to HKG. Again, I will choose 8 hour-10 hour connections (be a vigilante and defy the short connections that airlines tend to give) so as to not give myself a coronary.

Friendly advice from me to you . .. you might be able to enjoy the shops and sights in LHR in the meantime!

Cheers! Have a safe trip and enjoy yourself!

I don't see a problem with a connection to EDI. Even if the the inbound flight late and you miss the LHR-EDI flight you're booked on, BA operates LHR-EDI almost hourly so you won't have to wait long for the next flight. It would be different if you were connecting to the only flight of the day, or on a route with only 2 or 3 flights a week. But even at LHR (which I avoid whenever possible) 2 hours is usually enough.

Should be any problem at all 2h 15m usually is enough. You would have to pass through immigration, but you don't have to collect your bags as they will be sent directly to EDI.

I'd re-ask this question nearer the time. Nobody will be able to give you an idea at the moment until T5 is up and running and all the terminal moves are complete.

Re-post again about a month before your flight, and you should get some more solid info. Your bags should be able to be checked straight through and you will normally clear immigration at LHR, though not at the main arrivals area, but in the transfer area.

I guess it's not as bad as US airports where you have to look through the Baggage claim for your bags and re-check, EVEN if your bags are directly checked through!

Here's a question more about baggage check (interline). Let's say I have an award with AA and EI, and I want to transfer to a later evening BA flight, can I check it all the way through or would i still have to collect my bags? I was thinking since EI was no longer a OneWorld partner, whether they would do that.
