Virgin Atlantic Cabins

Having just returned from a flight with Virgin Atlantic on one of their 747-400's (Ladybird) I just had a quick question im hoping someone can answer for me. I have flown with Virgin many times, usually from Heathrow and have flown on the V Port Equipment as well as odyssey and im familiar with their 'checkerboard' colours in their cabin which I have always quite liked. I was quite shocked to find as I entered the cabin at Manchester on a flight to Orlando that the interior was nothing like I've seen before on Virgin...

3 Grey Seats....4 Red....3 Grey was the layout throughout in economy.... quite bland and not what I've ever seen on Virgin. Why is this? Is this the case on all Manchester aircraft? Do they plan to change to standard Virgin Interiors? The IFE was the Nova I believe which was fine but just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the cabins?

Cheers Guys,

It is becomig the standard now! Is part of the new cabin look for all VS fleet. some of the A343 already have it and the newest A346 not only have the new seat colors but the new Alpha seat in economy which is much better than the old economy seats.

Virgin are basically growing up as an airline and becoming more serious rather than the fun loving airline they were percieved to be in the old days, although they are still not as stuffy as BA for example. The old 4 multi-coloured cabins were also starting to look a little old fashioned and charter like and the airline is trying to move away from that percieved image now they are getting bigger and a becoming a more serious global contender.

I'm also sure costs will come into it somewhere along the line as no doubt it is cheaper to stock 2 colours of seat cover rather than 4.

The turth is that VS is effective doing an "updated return" to its pre-Union Jack livery and colorschemes.

Also not to forget that VS generally forgets its LGW/MAN a/c when there's an upgrade with anything pretty much.

How many years ago did v-port come out and still it's not on the LGW/MAN a/c !?!

Actually the LGW fleet were the first to get the new upholstery in W/Y.

They also had the UCS fitted pretty swiftly after roll out.

The V:Port comment is a little selective with the truth. The reason most LHR aircraft have V:port is because they were delivered very recently and came with the system "factory fitted". The A343 fleet don't have V:Port for exactly the same reason - the cost of re-fitting each aircraft is literally £millions and is only economical to do during a D check

This comes up every so often and the fact is that the IFE fitted on any VS aircraft is still superior to pretty much all of the competition - VS have been at the forefront of IFE technology since their conception and yet they still get criticised because one system is better than the other!

It's the inconsistency of service and product offering that lets VS down, if they can't afford it for the whole fleet why did they even start ? Something for the some but bugger the rest ?

I'm sorry but it's well known that VS do not treat their LGW/MAN pax with the same service as LHR pax. Trust me, I hear it all the time from our customers. You also just have to look at SkyTrax !

Actually it's pot luck as to which a/c is sent to Manchester. There are no a/c that are 'earmarked' from MAN.

So its better to keep an entire fleet of older aircraft than replace them with brand new ones because the product has evolved?

No airline in the world that I know of has an identical product across its entire fleet. You are talking about aircraft which cost many £millions to reconfigure and upgrade, and which have to be ordered years in advance of their entry into service.

Let me give you a comparism - Iike for like aircraft for consistency.

Today

VS075 - B744 - Odyssey equipped
VS009 - B744 - V:Port equipped

Aircraft Type - identical
Service/meals - identical
Y class seat - VS075 - New colour seat covers/cabin
VS009 - Old "multi-coloured" seat/cabin
W class seat - Identical layout Upper+lower deck seating on both aircraft / new covers on VS075
J class seat - Identical.
Seat Pitch/recline in all cabins: Identical

So the only appreciable difference from a customer perpective is the IFE. Those customers with the "inferior" IFE will still get their own PTV, a detachable controller, 12 movie channels, numerous TV shows, games, in seat texting etc.

If I were to pick any other competitor from MAN to the US would I get a superior or even equal IFE system on any of them (CO, AA, DL, Travel City, Monarch, Thomson, etc.etc.???) With the exception of possibly First Choice and maybe one or two others I have missed, I think not.

Its not just VS. BA are exactly the same and aircraft at LHR are updated with new products before LGW.

I think its best though to update the aircraft that operate out of the most money making airport. Theres no point in updating the LGW/MAN fleet when they would make more money by updating the LHR fleet, essentially the aircraft that more pax fly on and more money is to be made

Takes all the fun out of it!

(yeah, It's not that fun working for the department that has to change/clean/etc said seat covers when you have 5 different colours/patterns and only 6 airplanes to start with. I've more than once had to invent a pattern on the spot when we were short of matching seat covers)
