Just been thinking about certain thought with RTW tickets
Normally these RTW tickets are usually cheaper if your travels do happen to take you half way round the world than just doubling back on your journey (eg MIA-HKG-MIA would normally cost more rather than MIA-HKG-LHR-MIA) (i also know there aint a direct MIA-HKG also!).
I have been studying One World fares with RTW travel schemes and they do sound tempting (such as 4 continents in first class for around 10000US dollars.... i though that the fare wasnt bad!).
They say also that when you buy this, you need to book your first international segment. My question really is.....
What is the situation then after you have travelled (say I have decieded to start in MIA and go onto NRT via DFW- so I am going westwards around the world) your first international segment and i dont know when i want to travel onwards (i would probably continue onto HKG and then SYD). Would i need to have all these segments booked before i leave my start journey or can i just walk upto the airport and see when i can get on a plane onwards?? Would I have to phone up a One World no before to just get a booking??
I would like to one day travel around the world and visit Asia, but i dont know how long i will stay in certain countries (this may also depend on how long they allow tourists to stay also!!) so i wouldnt want to book tickets unless i was sure i was ready to move on...
If anybody has done one of these One World RTW tickets or any other type of RTW tickets i would like to hear about your experiences on onward travel after your first destination and how easy it is to get onward travel.....

I live in Paris, but do business in Asia Pac and am from Australia. Hence I use OneWorld RTW tickets (in J) for both business and home trips. This year I will complete 6 full OW RTW trips in J.
I always book the entire trip in advance. They cannot ticket (as far as I know) unless you have a set itinerary as this determines all the airport taxes and the final fare. The fares are based on the number of contintents and the country of purchase. Date and time changes are always possible for free, but changes of routing attract a 100USD fee, based, I believe of the fact that these used to have to be complex paper tickets and required about 30mins skilled ticket work to re-do. e-tickets make it hard to justify said fee and I have challenged in those cases.
Am currently on my 5th RTW this year and am writing from BOM; full itinerary is CDG-LHR-JFK-LAX-MEL-SIN-HKG-NRT-HKG-BKK-BOM-LHR-CDG; in Dec-Jan I did: CDG-LHR/LGW-SZG-LGW/LHR-SIN-SYD-CBR-MEL-BNE-SYD-AKL-SCL-GIG-MAD-CDG
When all's said and done, there'll be more said than done.

As mentioned, you must have your itenerary set prior to purchase. There are usually many options (four continents, five, etc). You must continue in the same direction.
I would say check out SkyTeam, OneWorld, STAR and then also look at the Cathay Pacific website (they have a circle Asia trip). There are many options, usually cheaper starting and ending in Asia, but still a great deal if you have a month or two or more to travel. Also, adding additional stops usually adds a couple hundred dollars depending on the city.

It helps to have the journey pre-planned, but it is not essential. With the Oneworld product, you can leave all flight coupons open (except your first international flight which must be confirmed). I personally don't believe there is a huge advantage in having open-dated coupons. Simple date/time/carrier changes on the same route are permitted free of charge for revalidation. Rerouting would be subject to a $125 fee plus any tax difference (or you may just as easily receive a tax refund). I gather that CX have recently begun a revalidation fee for all non-CX ticket stock which fairly sucks. Many people (particularly intrepid and indecisive Australians) frequently re-arrange their journey entirely, add additional continents and sell their mother halfway through their trip, so you certainly have the flexibility to re-arrange your plans at any point in your trip. You do need to be careful on some routes when amending at short notice as availability can be chronic (LA flights between SYD/AKL-SCL and SCL-IPC-PPT are incredibly notorious for this).
Having a confirmed date on your flight coupon leaves you in a much stronger position should any schedule changes occur, particularly if it increase your number of overall flight coupons or segments in a specific geographic region (ie, AA have been known to offer DEN-GUA using just one flight number even though it involves a change of plane in DFW. If AA withdraw this, you will have to amend your open-dated coupon as DEN-DFW/MIA-GUA which may take you above the permitted 6 flights in North America or 20 overall flight coupons).
I would strongly recommend you pay a vist to the Oneworld and Star Alliance forums on Flyertalk before shelling out a substantial amount of $$$ on your ticket, as they can give very clued up advice on routings to maximise mileage earning etc and also very creative in getting you a lower fare for the ticket (a 4 continent fare from MRU is about $6200).

My plan is to use to of my hard earned cash and also savings to go on a long break to parts of Asia. I was thinking now also thinking of sampling most of the first class One World has to offer and enjoy most of Asia.
Also with a planned trip to Asia and SQ just receiving their big baby bus i was hoping to sample the joys of an A380 in person. (I know that wont be included on my OW ticket so more money to spend!!- Will it be worth it tho.......)
Seems tho now i will have to plan this trip in full now and get books out and see how long i want to stay in certain countries and make sure i dont miss out on anything cool in Asia (mostly looking at Japan, China, Aussie, New Zealand, Thailand, Sinapore and possibly Vietnam and Cambodia).
Probably looking at the destinations i will have to pay extra as i think i will only be allowed a certain no of stops in one continent soo it seems that my plan will have to be well planned!!

Last year I spent 6 months travelling RTW, based on a One World ticket. I fully booked the itinerary first (which took a LOT of planning) but the ticket was very flexible, enabling free changes of dates. I used an agent to book this, as there were a LOT of legs, one of which (AKL-SCL) proved impossible to book within my time frame.
Two things to consider. One, is that while the RTW ticket is great for flying between continents, while within continents, there are often more interesting overland alternatives.
Secondly, there a lot of LCCs around, which are often very useful for "filling in the gaps" in an itinerary, and add very little to the overall cost. For example, I used Air Asia a lot to get around SE Asia.
