I had posted this under a different topic, but I thought I'd throw it out for the greater community in the hope that someone would have more information or understanding why.
If NWA was going to order the 747-400, why not go ahead and get the 747-400LR like Qantas did? They would get the upgraded interior if they did as well as longer range. It would seem to make sense. Boeing is not really charging more for the LR is it?
Also, isn't the A330 a competitor to the 777? If that is the case, is this not a rejection of the 777? I'm hoping those with more knowledge or insight to these issues can let me know their thoughts.

NWA probably purchased the A330 because it has the same identical cockpit setup as the A320 family and they choose the P&W 4000 series engines because they power their 747-400s.
