TOKYO, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Japan Airlines Co Ltd (JAL)
<9201.T> said on Thursday it will pay $345 million for engines
manufactured by U.S. engine maker General Electric Co for
11 aircraft ordered from Boeing Co .
The aircraft include three 767-300ER and eight 777-200ER jets
ordered in November last year, JAL said.
The decision to order GE engines came after the Japanese
carrier also reviewed offerings from two other manufacturers:
U.S. engine maker Pratt and Whitney, a unit of United
Technologies Corp , and Britain's Rolls-Royce Plc ,
JAL said.

I remember when JAL chose the CF6-80C2 for it's 744's after a thorough technical review, but I consider this bigger news. This article mentions the 777's are -200ER's, not -300ER's. What's going on?

I believe this stems from JAL looking to build up a GE 90 fleet so that their -300LRs are not complete orphans. When all the 777's JAL has on order are delivered, their fleet will be:

PW 4000

10 777-200
5 777-300

GE 90

8 777-200ER
8 777-300LR

So this makes alot of sense, actually.
