Quick question for some of the experts here...

I am traveling from BKK to TPE, and then TPE onto LAX. First leg from BKK, I am flying business class on Thai, and then from TPE to LAX, I am flying business class on Singapore. I've got a tremendously long layover, like 10-12 hours, aside from going into the city, which Star Alliance lounge is best to hang at.

Advice is appreciated....

You most likely only have access to the Singapore Lounge based on your ticket.

With the High Speed Rail System you could could catch the shuttle bus from the airport to the train station then be in Taipei in an about an hour or so.

I would go take in some local scenery at 101 and or one of the shopping streets Ximen or Chunghsaio Fuxing. Hotpants and Miniskirts are the rage this year in Taipei. Sometimes the effect is startling other times amazing!

Currently the HSR doesn't stop anywhere near the airport (although there *is* a station, it's not operational at this time -- station info at http://www.thsrc.com.tw/en/travel/stations.asp ). The busride from the airport to the city is about an hour and costs about US$5.

For information on the airport facilities, the website www.taoyuanairport.gov.tw is a fairly decent source of info. I don't know if there is any left-luggage facility (there should be) if you want to leave your carry-on luggage at the airport.

There is no hotel at the airport currently (it's being rebuilt). However there is one just down the road that looks pretty decent ... if only I could remember the name of it ... CityPark I think.

Once you're in Taipei, get a daypass on the MRT (underground) and you can get to most of the sites easily enough. A day pass costs NT$200 IIRC (US$6 or so).

I don't think that spending 12 hours in the airport lounge is going to be at all enjoyable (haven't been to the SQ lounge admittedly), but generally speaking, they're in the center of the airport, and offer no spotting opportunities. Additionally, there's no observation deck at Taipei that I know of.

If you're here over a weekend, PM me, and perhaps I can take you to some of the spotting areas near the airport. Or if you have any other questions, I can try to answer for you.

Also, you're going to have to change terminals -- TG flies from Terminal 1, SQ from Terminal 2. There is a shuttle train running between them, but I don't know details about it ... never used it.

Isn't there an aviation museum at the airport, with a viewing area on the top of it? (Saw this on the CKS airport website).

There is one at the airport -- I forgot about it. I've never been there personally (although would like to have an excuse to go there). However, I've heard from a few sources that the museum has been closed ... again, I don't know how true that is. I will try to find out.

BTW, SFOHORIZON -- if you're traveling on a US passport, you can get a landing visa valid for two weeks at the airport at no charge. No need to worry about visa requirements if you do decide to enter Taiwan.

Not true. I took the HSR from Hsinchu to Taipei this past Saturday and the train did stop in Tauyoan. 30 minutes total time from Hsinchu to Taipei Main Station. Very nice experience on the HSR. The train does stop underground at Tauyoan station. While riding into town from Hsinchu there is a very nice view of the airport from the train.

There is a luggage storage company I think it called Pinoy or Pinay it is located near the check in desk for Air Macau in terminal 1. I happened to notice that this past Monday walking to the Toilet after check in on Cathay. I made a mental note of it since I have an overnight layover on the 7th of December at TPE.

As far as having to change terminals as long as you are in the secured area you can walk between the terminals.

It would be nice if there was a decent transit hotel near the airport to save the trip to Taipei or Hsinchu for the night.

Sorry, my bad -- you're right CJ. I usually go past the station exit from the freeway, and it's labeled with the town that the station is *actually* in, not what the station is called (typical of this country!) so I thought there was a stop closer to the airport than Taoyuan. If you go to Google Earth and zoom out to about 30,000 ft, and enter the coordinates: 25 deg 02'07.53" N 121 deg 14' 14.7" E you should get a nice view of both the airport and the HSR station on a 1024 x 768 pixel screen (the coordinates are for the freeway interchange you can see -- the HSR station should be under a couple of blue dots indicating photographs).

Either way, I think it's still actually quicker to take the bus directly into Taipei rather than take the bus to Taoyuan, and then hop the train to Taipei Main Station.

The hotel is in the process of being built -- the old airport hotel was a dive of note. It's been razed, and Novotel is working in partnership with the airport to build a new one. Originally I thought they would simply be refurbishing the old one, but when I went to HKG two weeks ago, I noticed that the whole thing has been razed.

Thanks everyone for the input.

My layover will be the end of a very long holiday, one which will have already taken me to Taipei for a few days, so I am not quite sure what I will wind up doing, but we shall see...

If you' decide not to go to Taipei, there's a transit hotel in Terminal 2 (Brenintw, did you know there's one within T2 w/o clearing immigration and custom?). Keep in mind that you'll have to switch to T2 for SQ from T1 (where TG is based) anyway.

Since you're coming from BKK (no jet leg) , I'd recommend hanging around Taipei, mostly 101 and Ximending, if you still feel refreshed toward the end of trip. The afore-mentioned link to Taoyuan HSR station is actually close to airport and can be reached by Taoyuan County bus, simply ask info desk on the first floor once you get out (this bus has luggage rack as many go to the station and connect to Southern Taiwan) but it might be too much hassle in your case unless you're a rail buff

No, I don't know -- I seldom fly through T2, since CX flies from T1 -- and since I live here, I never transit Big grin
