Boeing researching new, faster plane - WSJ
NEW YORK, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Boeing Co is considering a design for a new jet that could cut travel times by as much as 15 percent, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition on Friday.
Boeing, trying to keep pace with European rival Airbus Industrie , still hasn't made plans to actually build the 250-seat plane, the paper said, citing people close to the matter.
The Seattle-based aerospace giant, which is in heated competition with Airbus to sell its jets to commercial carriers and delivery handlers, is studying the design under the code name "Yellowstone," the Journal reported.
The planes, which would look like the Concord supersonicjet, would use three engines to fly up to a speed of Mach .95, or just below the speed of sound, the paper said. That would be faster than Boeing's 747-400 jumbo jet, which travels at speeds of Mach .85, the paper added.
Executives at Boeing said planes similar to the ones reportedly being researched under Yellowstone are being studied but declined to elaborate, the paper said.
Boeing shares closed off $1- at $57- in trading on the New York Stock Exchange, below a 52-week high of $70-15/16 and above a yearly low of $32.

At Mach 0.95, you will have all sorts of airflow around the plane that would go into shock (go supersonic) That area between mid-0.90 to Mach 1.00 is pretty unstable, and most supersonic aircraft try to cross it without hanging around too long.
