Alaska Airlines Gives Discount To Homosexuals

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air have announced a new program that will charge heterosexuals 10 percent extra for their air travel to specific locations during the Christmas season.

The company actually offers the 10 percent as a discount but only if the purchaser obtains the ticket through a "gay" page of the company's website, a location not typically patronized by families seeking travel arrangements, according to an Idaho activist who was distressed by the offering.

Bryan Fischer, of the Idaho Values Alliance, told WND the company boasts of its "nondiscrimination" policies, but, "here they are blatantly discriminating against heterosexuals in their pricing structure."

Word of the discount came through an airline employee, who needed to remain anonymous because of concerns over retaliation. The employee reported the company had sent e-mails out announcing the "very soft launch" of the new promotion.

Personally, id rather this topic not turn into a debate over whether or not homosexuality is right or wrong. This should be strictly about whether or not this policy is fair... as if there really should be a question at all. As a stright individual, i find this rather unfair to heterosexuals across the country. I'm stright, i'm christian, and i believe what i believe. However, i good friends with someone who is gay and i respect homosexuals. I do not discriminate for or against them. I believe Alaska should abandon this policy and stick to their "proud, nondiscriminatory policies."

It's perfectly fair, especially considering that anybody can use the discount. It is targeted advertising, nothing more. Anybody can take advantage of the offer if they book through the "gay travel" website.

I see no problem with it.

I can use the "gay" section of AS's site as quickly as the next person. . . .

No different than AS offering discounts to constituents in Alaska so they can get to Juneau during the Legislative Sessions . . . . "anyone" can get the fare, but the fare is targeted at Alaskans.

Press on AS - just an advertising gimmick.

Nope, Lutheran and proud of it. Seriously, either talk about simply the fairness or unfairness of the issue or dont post at all. I'd suggest deletion on this topic before i sit here and get flamed for saying i RESPECT homosexuals dispite not agreeing with their lifestyle. Thats not the issue at hand here.

Well, gosh, I can't see this as anything but trouble in the long run. All kinds of operators offer all kinds of discounts to all manner of groups and associations. Got an AAA card? you get a discount. But how do you justify a discount based on sexual orientation?

I'm suspicious. Is this a set up by somebody?

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

It's no different to insurance companies that offer discounts to seniors and women. It is simply targettted advertising to attract new clientele and the fact that anybody gay or straight, can book them (I assume there is no gay test when you try to book!!!) shows that there is no actual discrimination.

Starting this thread and then stating that you hope this doesn't turn into a debate over homosexuality is pretty laughable.

Listen -- when my partner of over ten years can benefit from the over 1,100 benefits married heterosexuals receive (income tax benefits, inheritance rights, medical decision-making, etc., etc.) on a federal level, then you can talk about "fairness for heterosexuals".

When the salaries of professional gay men reach parity of heterosexuals (average 10-20% lower than heterosexual counterparts in the same positions - source www.advocate.com), then you can talk about "fairness" for heterosexuals.

I could go on and on. Would you be asking the same question if AA advertised a special on a Spanish-language website? Or a website with a large African-American audience?

Oh -- and bye the way --- I'm Christian too and I think it's obvious I believe something completely different than you.

The premise of this thread, that this discount is only available to people of homosexual orientation, is factually incorrect. This thread is straight (no pun intended) flamebait.

This is no different from advertising a sale in a gay-oriented magazine.

Thank you for your respectful post!! In this day and age when everyone screams all the time (assuming that if you yell loud enough for long enough, people will start believing you!), it is nice to see something pointed out calmly and rationally. I hope that will continue here at a.net.

It is true that gay people do suffer discrimination every day in many forms (marraige and its privileges comes to mind); however, two wrongs do not equal a right. Even as someone in the former category, I don't think it is any more acceptable to offer discounts exclusively to homosexuals than it is to offer a discount exclusively to heterosexuals.

Now, on a humorous side note - what would an passenger do if asked to prove the discount applied to them?  rotfl

What website is this above??? Is it some bible bashing activist website???? Just look at the topics on the right hand side !!!! The article is mis leading and biased journalism at its worst.

They give a 10% discount for Gay passengers booking on their Gay website . Whats the big deal??? They give discounts to members of their FF program also !!! But do we see people giving out stink because they do not have a AS FF card???

What about the discounts that some coupons have in Supermarkets?? Some people may not shop in Walgreens where AS is giving a 10% coupon !! Should this be axed also ???

I think any normal broadminded person incl myself will see it for what it is and its a non story hyped up by religious freaks!!!

Good. Well done them for doing something slightly different, if a little bizarre. Positive discrimination is nearly as bad as plain old-fashioned tried-and-tested proper discrimination.

Distressed? What was there to cause undue distress?! I've been very distressed this week by the load of vile verbal abuse I received from a born-again christian co-worker who I told I was gay. I always do this at new places of work in the spirit of openness, honesty, trust and mutual respect. More fool me.
