Will We See A B 747 Classic In Cathay's Livery?

As you all know, all of Cathay Pacific's B 747-200s as well as B 747-300s have been retired from the fleet and many of these have been leased to airlines like Air Atlanta, Pakistan Airlines etc etc.

The reason why Cathay retired these planes were due to the Asian Financial Crisis and they would like to minimize their costs of operating an aircraft.

However, the Economy of Hong Kong is beginning to take off quickly and more and more people are beginning to travel again. Cathay has leased 3 A 340-300s from Air China.

These planes suck! No PTV at all! Besides, I definitely prefer flying on a B 747 Classic rather than these leased planes.

Will we ever see Cathay Pacific's B 747-200 or 300 rejoining Cathay some day?

All ideas are welcome!

One thing I would like to add in is that the number of passengers they are getting has been increasing like mad. So it would be wise if they upgrade their B 747 Classics and have them rejoining Cathay.

I'm afraid not...
Coz CX is hoping that PIA can extend it's plane leasing contract with CX, it shows that CX is not going to operate Classic fleets anymore...

But I suspect Cathay would just order more 777/744s and Airbuses to keep up with demand.

In fact, some of their Classics were not that old. And they can rejoin Cathay at anytime.

There is still a chance that they can rejoin Cathay. Cathay has put in a lot of money upgrading these planes in the past. PTVs etc etc

I do not recall the classics having PTV's, but i may be wrong!
This is because all the new Airbus A330's, A340's, B777-200's were replacing some of the 747-200/300's and L1011's (i read it in the cathay pacific magazing on a flight from hong kong to london) And they were upgrading slowly all their 747-400's. Im not saying that they were fitting thenew Boeings and Airbus's with PTV's because they were delivered with them installed, but they were the replacements.

Even before they retiered the 747-200/300's the 747-400's were not all fitted, so it would have made sense that the planes that were going to stay had the PTV's.

hope thats cleared up some things
kind regards

B-HON, a 747-300, is still VERY young (less than 10 years old) and it's now on the desert waiting for the next operator!!

Except for B-HKG, HIA and HIB, I really hope that the planes will rejoin Cathay after the leasing period (to VS, PK and Air Atlanta). But the chance seems slim... since the 747 classics will be really CLASSIC by the time the leases are over.

Well I don't think it would be a problem since it will be three years time only. I would love to see Cathay's B 747 Classics again.

Why don't they give B-HON a chance and have them flying for Cathay right now?

One of the -200s (VR-HKG) has been scrapped, according to what I read on this page: http://www.bird.ch/bharms/asr_sh00.htm
Does anyone know why this happened? It wasn't that old compared to some other 747s currently in airline service.

I don't think the remaining -300 will rejoin the fleet cos this will cause some operational problems. It will be very difficult to accommodate an aircraft with such a different configuration to the others currently in service. In any case, if CX wanted more planes of this capacity, I'm sure they'll go for more 777-300s instead now since they are more economical for shorter journeys. Using 742 and 743s on the short-haul routes CX used to use them on was a bit of a waste of their long-haul capabilities.

I recall that all the -300s had been fitted with PTVs. Did PIA take them with the PTVs or did they redo the interiors to their specs?

Why don't they put some of their B 747-300 on long haul routes? I am sure they are able to fly long haul routes and they are very new and has been put on some long haul routes like HKG-SYD, HKG-LHR etc.

How about B-Hon? That is a very new plane and it can be used as a subsidy for the B 747-400. So as other CX's B 743s.

Anymore idea on whether or not Cathay's B 747 Classics will rejoin Cathay Pacific or not?  Smile

Cathay still operates Classics, the four 747-200F freighters.

CX will most likely NOT bring the 747 classics back into their passenger fleet. All of the aircraft in their current passenger fleet have 2-man flight crew. Bringing back the 747 classics will require the hiring of Flight Engineers all over again. While CX still have four 747-200 freighters, the flight crew for the cargo fleet is actually contracted out to a company outside of the CX organization. There is no way CX could get the cargo crew to operate the passenger fleet, as that will certainly ignite a major row with their own pilots.

While traffic may be booming, that won't be enough to cover the cost of bringing back the 747 classics.

Why is B-HON sitting somewhere doing nothing? Why doesn't Cathay having it flying for them? It is quite a new plane still. 9 years I guess.

What are they going to do with B-HON? Will it rejoin Cathay?

B-HON is currently stored at VCV.

I highly doubt that CX will return the 747 "Classics" to the fleet. In my opinion and many others, the "Classic" disposal came to fast. CX was very worried about the falling traffic demands and got rid of the 747-200s to soon. If they had had more foresight, they would have held on to them for 4-6 months longer and realised that the financial situation was not as bad as it seemed. Returning the aircraft to the fleet now would be to expensive. As much as I would LOVE to see them return, in all likelihood 99% they will not. Most likely more A330/340 and 777-300s will be ordered. If they are really in need of capacity possibly they could purchase 4 747-400s that BA will put up for sale within the next 2 years. If you want to see "Classics" in the CX fleet though look no further than the cargo ramp across the way! 4 747-200Fs.

How about the B 747-300? Why did they retire their B 743s? Provided that their B 747-300s aren't that old really.........

Will we see a B 747-300 in Cathay's livery? They shouldn't have retired their B 743s. Will they come back some day?

Also, it seems that B-HON is still very new. Why is it being stored?

Please let me know! Thanks
