I work across the runway from the Reeve Aleutian Airways hanger in Anchorage AK. As I have mentioned before RAA is the last operator of passenger carring L-188 Electras. Word is that this will probably be the last year of Electra operations for the airlines. I brought it up when the article about Reeve appeard in Airways magazine a while back. The speculation that had been going around was that RAA was going to going to get rid of the Electras by aquiring a couple of Dash-8's, However I had a number of problems with this train of thought (based on my observations when I worked for them).

One of the theories I had was that when the FAA finally tells Reeve to knock-off flying the Electras,(rumor is that they said no later then this year) was that they where going to go and pull their two remaining Nihon YS-11's (N169RV was sold in 1996) out of ramp storage and start flying them again. I finally got some evidence of that a couple of nights ago.

I was dropping some of our passenger off at the shuttle bus drop-off spot at the main terminal. As I was pulling out I noticed that there was only one YS-11 parked on the Reeve ramp. I wasn't able to get a tail number to tell if it was 171RV or 173RV but it had the right hand engine removed. When I got back to the south airpark I looked over to the Reeve hanger The hanger was open and inside the hanger was the other YS-11.

My thoughts are that if you want to get a L-188 Electra ride better do it before the end of this summer because it appears to me that the Reeve Mechanics are trying to get at least one, or both of the YS-11's operational.

Anybody out there heard anything else? Or do you have your own theories. I don't get ACAR or any of the aircraft trade sheets that might have anyother information.

I have been on 33 Electras and 27 YS-11s, and I know that they are nowhere near the same size. Could a YS-11 handle the passenger and cargo requirements of these Electra routes? Wouldn't they have to increase frequency? If I remember correctly, Reeve Electras make one round trip per day. Correct me if I'm wrong. Can a YS-11 be made into a combi?

Hopefully they´ll fly the Electras for a couple of weeks as I´m trying to get there later this month and fly one!
Well, I wouldn´t mind flying in YS-11 either but Electra is more interesting.
L-188! Do you have any airlines flying passenger Convairs there at ANC? And is there anything left of the derelict Lockheed Starliner you got there for years? Thanks!

I know that this is sacrilige but I do think that the YS-11 would have been a better choice then retaining the L-188 when Reeve put their YS-11's in storage during the early 1990's. They are smaller and don't burn as much gas. One of the marking problems that I noticed when I was working for Reeve was that they where competeing with one flight a day with a fairly large aircraft against several carriers that where operating 19 and 30 seat aircraft operating more flights. read that as being more convient for connecting flights. I think that this was really hurting Reeve. This is why I wouldn't mind seeing them switch to smaller aircraft and more flights. The YS-11 are are Combi aircraft. which is a good thing because the belly compartment is reportedly smaller then the one on the CV-580. Talking to rampers who did work with the YS-11 they tried to put all of the bag and cargo loads topside and carry extra seats in the belly. They can't handle standard pallets but can be bulk loaded.

When are you comming up? I don't think that you have much to worry about. they wouldn't put the Electra's out to pasture until winter when traffic decreases. ERA aviation flies CV-580's. Their hangers is at the south airpark at ANC across the taxiway from the FS-air hanger where I work. Era also operates two DC-3's as tour aircraft. I havn't been on one of those flights but I hear they are pretty neat. Once in a while the DC-3 will sub in for one of the line aircraft when there is a mainatence problem with another aircraft. Drop me a line if you need any suggestions on where to go or where the best place to take pictures are.

I belive that both the Connie and the Ex-Reeve DC-4 that where at the fire training area have been removed. But don't hold me to that.

I heard recently on an email list that Reeve will NOT be retiring the Electras in the near future.
