Today's Minneapolis Star Tribune has an interesting article about Champion Air, which says Champion will be losing 70% of their business next year, when NW takes MLT vacations business in house, and the NBA ends their charter contract. The article goes on to say "Champion Air risks going out of business in 2008 unless it secures new investors and customers".

Intersting article to read and looking forward to hearing opinions from posters with more in-depth information but for me it sounds fairly hopeless to save this airline as long as they can't upgrade to newer air craft types. It appears even with the NBA and MLT contracts they are losing money. Would the NBA consider renewing if they upgraded their air craft ? Do they have the resources to upgrade and purchase/lease new air craft ? For me it sounds like "it's time to abandon the slowly sinking ship" which employees are apparently already doing.

Cheers,

Peter

The article states that Champion is unable to upgrade to newer aircraft(the 737-800/900 or the A320/A321 would be good replacements).

I think they still contract with the US in transporting prisoners. Perhaps they can secure more flying through that route. I too would be saddened to see them close doors, and see less 727's in the air. Maybe they can team up with Sun Country?

The Twins still use Champion also.

Hope they stay around - I had my first two flights with them!

Well this is what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket and you assume that business you have you always will have. They appear to be happy with no thought of planning for the future.

They have 16 Well maintained 727's..... I am sure that they charter them in VIP config to business travellers, although i doubt that would be enough to continue supporting 16 aircraft full time.

I would hate to see those 727's leave and I am optimistic that they will find a way to keep flying.

BTW, what problem does the NBA have with 727's? Are they concerned about the safety?

Many people went from SY to Champion, when Champion was lunched by founder Richard Page. Once again this proves that the airline industry is a hard one. If they should close you bet that someone will buy their AOC, change the name and start another airline.

By the way MLT helped SY get its start and NW pulled all MLT biz from SY at one point too. I know of several folks at Champion and wish them all well and good luck.

It would be sad to see Champion Air go.  Sad Champion is the only airline with passenger 727s at MSP.

Damn. I always enjoy seeing these 727s on the ramp. If they would public/charter to BWI I would save up the money to fly with them!

Just say NO to scabs.

Lets see
1) Fuel Burn
2) Short on range particularly on Westbound Coast-Coast trips necessitating enroute stops adding to time and cost.
3) While interiors are not bad, they do look dated with typical 1980s leather seats/couches etc..

From what I understand both Miami Air and Northwest are bidding on the NBA contract using 737-800s and A319/A320s respectively. NWA used to have the NBA flying with a dedicated fleet of 727s until the model was withdrawn from service.

With 50 some odd seats I was quite sure that a 727 could fly anywhere in the continental united states.

I was pretty sure the interiors of the Champion Air 727's are quite up to date. I was on board 3 of their VIP charter 727's, and they looked quite fine to me... Not 1980's at all!

They are -200adv so yes, with 50 seats that should be true. You could top off standard tanks and with their -17s climb right on up to the upper 30's where she isn't too bad on the fuel burn. Does anyone know if the Champion birds have the extra belly tank??

I too hope that their management can secure additional flying and keep it going. It will be a sad day when the last pax 727 leaves the skies over the U.S.

I don't understand why Champion don't pursue taking on a few 738s? This would eradicate alot of the above problems, even if it did mean sending some 727s to the scrapper.

As mentioned above, Champion Air is a classic example of a business failing to adapt to a changing business climate. I wouldn't write them off quite yet though, they may have a few tricks up their sleeve  Wink

Are you under the impression that Champion flies schedule service? It is totally a charter airline.

With NW doing the MLT Vacation flying, will they be starting routes like DFW-LAS on a scheduled basis or will they do the MLT routes as charters?
