In January, My best friend is going to Greece to perform with her school band, and she is wanting to know if she can take her Saxophone with her on board, or if she will have to check it. She will be flying United from ORD to FRA, and Lufthansa from FRA to ATH. Can anyone give me any tips on whether she should bring her soft case, or her hard case?

I carried a trombone on an AA MD-80 before, its not a big deal really but it depends on the type of saxophone. An alto would probably be ok, but a tenor or larger would probably have to be checked. I would recommend the soft case for if it is an alto simply because it makes it much smaller. I was able to get my trombone in the overhead but a nice F/A stuck it in the closet up in first class for me instead. You could always ask and the worst that could happen would be they gate check it anyway.

I think the carry-on policy for US airlines is that musical instruments can be gate valet items; i.e. drop it off in the jetway to be placed in the hold and get it back planeside at the next stop. At least for US Airways it is...
But at any rate, I would recommend a hard case if there was even the slightest inkling she'd have to check it. We do our best to take care of insturments, but just like items shifting in the overhead bin, stuff shifts in the hold.
Best thing would be to call both airlines to determine their policies, and go from there.

I think a question to consider is if she would have a problem in FRA and ATH/FRA on return since I know the UK enforces strict size requirements for carry on. They still also restrict the number of carry on to one. This could be the problem.
