Apparently more that 100 pax, all with Slovakians passports, were forced to disembark from the Condor jet in Salvatore de Bahia, see http://www.tasr.sk/30.axd?k=20071209TBB00371

A fair use copy follows:
The convoluted incident revolves around a bad smell coming from the plane's engines that resulted in the flight initially being aborted and then, the next day, repeated problems that led to the breakdown in communications between the pilot and the Slovak passengers, according to Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Jan Skoda, who spoke to SLOVAKIA on Sunday.

He adds that, as well as an absence of complaints from the Slovaks there have been no reports of further conflict from Brazilian authorities either.

Following the two-day incident, the Slovak Embassy inquired directly with the airport in Salvator de Bahia, but the staff didn't have any records about the incident. Therefore, the Embassy will speak with other staff once again on Monday, said Skoda.

Originally the flight was to go from Salvator de Bahia to Frankfurt on December 5 in a Boeing owned by Condor Air (Germany). After they had boarded the plane however, several members of the Slovak group smelled something foul in the air.

Following an hour of flight the captain of the plane announced to the passengers that the plane has to make an emergency landing because of a suspiciously bad smell spreading in the air-conditioning. This was followed by a flight back to Salvator de Bahia, where Condor secured accommodation in a hotel for the passengers.

Pavol Kollar, who was on board the plane, told SLOVAKIA on Sunday that on Thursday a nearly 150-strong group of Slovaks were forced to deplane when the captain decided to get them off because he had a feeling that the Slovaks didn't trust the crew's abilities.

The captain told the passengers that they hadn't found the reasons for the suspicious smell on board, but that tests of the engine and hydraulic system confirmed that the airplane was in good condition. At the same time, the pilot announced a route change, and the plane was to fly via the eastern Brazilian airport in Belem and cross the Atlantic Ocean to Senegal in order to spend the shortest possible time over the ocean – in case it has to make an emergency landing.

Have any of you a.netters in Brazail picked up more about this story? I have tried to find more but both news.yahoo.com and news.google.com did not show anything.

Can't be true, as Belem-Dakar would be longer... You could make a stop in Natal, but what would be the point? When flying SSA-DKR you fly next to the coast until Recife/Natal, so if you need to land you can...

I scratch my head, therefore I am.

I have only 2 news articles, both in Slovakian : Stovka Slovákov musela vystúpiť z lietadla v Brazílii and Protestovali, vysadili ich

A fair use copy

Dvojtýždňový pobyt v Brazílii organizovala firma W.A.W. prostredníctvom parížskej cestovnej kancelárie.

A free translation: It seems that a local Slovakian company called W.A.W. organized so its employees and family members a vacation in Brazil.

Jano, you should translate a bit more from the second article. They claim that the pilots had the oxygen masks donned during return to SSA and that 15 passengers of German nationality plainly refused to board the plane next day.

OK, here is some of it translated

On the passanger setting ahead of me [something] started to drop. They told
us it was normal in the local enviroment. Ina few moment small drops started
to fall on me too. After about an hour long flight the smell in the cabin was
unbearable.

Mrs. Miklikova continues

The pilots had the oxygen masks donned, they were afraid of toxic air. During
the flight they were releasing the jet fuel, so that they culd safely land.
They switched off all but the emergency lights. We did not know if we return
back of it the aircraft falls down.

On the next day Dec 6th

Another pax says

The aircraft did not take off yet and the smell started to spread around. We
notified the tourist guide

The captain asked all passangers with Slovakian passport to leave the
aircarft, if they do not trust him. Some uniformed men boarded the plane, who
accopmanied the passangers out. Only one person and his family, Kollar's
family, refused to disembark.

I checked Condor's Contract of Carriage http://www11.condor.com/tcf-eu/agb.jsp and it does not seem that Condor can refuse the transportation based on what passport the pax holds. I'm having hard time believing that every single of those 150pax, who had to disembark, was found n violation of Condor's Contract of Carriage.

So I'm hoping there were some news in Brazilian press that could provide more insight into this.

Oh, so this is what happened here on the 5th.
The plane was D-ABUB, it departed around 1 hr late, and I saw it return around 2:20 later. The plane left the following day around 18:00 local, but the story about the "Slovakians" didnt come out in the press at all!

I dont know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone
