That´s a really nice boarding area, never quite seen something like that before.

I am not that sure of how unassigned seating works in Southwest, but it could mean a last minute rush to the plane? And is this new gate concept able to withstand the whole load of a 737?

Reforming all their gates to this new standard should also be quite expensive.

Only if people aren't paying attention to the boarding announcements.

And the fact of "unassigned seating" is irrelevant to the boarding process. They tell you your place in line when you check in...It's now printed on your boarding pass (rather than having to stand in line prior to boarding to get it).  Smile

Was going to say I WISHED! However at the rate senior attendants are staying on the job, and I mean senior in the literal sense, I dunn wanna see! Big grin While Asian airlines have mandatory retirement age, in the U.S. they can't force u to retire. I hear there is a 90 years old attendant at UA... no kidding!

So all of you coming to the U.S. looking forward to see Marilyn Monroe Blondes serviing you drinks, yer for a big surprise!

I only have one problem:

It's already hard enough to find seating in a crowded Southwest gate area. From the photos, it seems that quite a bit of "regular" seating has been removed and replaced with less seating, ie: larger seats, work areas, play areas. How is this going to work out?

Nothing worse than having to stand for an hour in the gate area or finally sit on the nasty floor.

This was my concern too.

Not at all. The boarding process is still regulated.

They have the money to do it.

Do they have this new setup in all the stations done already?

I'll be flying CMH-PHL in a couple weeks, I'll make sure to get some pics of the new setup if they've got the work done already.

The point to the new system was to promote people to stay in the airport concessions and eat or shop and relax and not have to worry about sitting in the gate for an hour prior to departure time. The only time this is going to suck is during irregular ops when you have two flights right next to each other in the same gate area and you want people to hang around for information. People will be everywhere!

As PIT already pointed out, the new boarding system is designed so not everybody need to be lined up all at once. Prbly too much to explain, the next time u go, it will become clear. It's more orderly than b4r.

Irregular Ops... nuthing anybody can do about those. Sometimes, dialing the 800# gives u quicker service than queuing up to speak to an agent! Everybody got a mobile now right, so use it!

Most stations do not have the new setup. All 64 will have it by the end of the first quarter next year.
