I was flightaware and saw that this flight is normally operates as 126, but today it is operated as 9868. Anyone know why this is being done? I know that 9000's are normally charters.

Joe

I imagine a 767-300 went tech in MAD and they are ferrying an empty 767-300 from JFK.

Don't forget flights can be used as extra sections

Same thing applies. I imagine an aircraft went tech at MAD and is now flying back to JFK on a ferry flight.

I've dug up some more information.

The aircraft that operated DL9868 today was N175DN.

DL126 was flown by N175DN yesterday and the return flight, DL127, was canceled. DL126/DL127 does not operate on Thursdays so the aircraft ferried back today.

What happened to the crew? Do they fly back as regular pax on other airlines? Do they still get paid?

Delta flight 126 is JFK-MAD and Delta 127 is the return....Delta 127 on 12DEC cancelled due to an inop captains altimeter. A replacement altimeter was sent in to fix it. The flight returned to JFK as DL9868 on 13DEC to protect the passengers.
The same crew was used since they had a 24hr layover from yesterday.

Thursdays so the aircraft ferried back today.

They used it as an "extra section"
