FedEx And Their 777s...when?

I was disappointed when FedEx decided to forgo the A380. Though I no longer live in Memphis, I do travel "home" from time to time. I was anxious to see the aircraft in FedEx colors. So, now that they are going 777, when will the River City see her first?

However, I wonder if FEDEX won't eventually buy at least a couple 380's. I'm thinking for routes to China, India, etc.

I expect the decision was really driven by the delivery delay, but the fact that a 777F can be used at any FX facility to full effect cannot be denied. While FX was preparing (at least) PVG, IND and MEM to handle the A388F's two decks, that infrastructure would have to be put into place before FX could use the A388F anywhere else, and that costs money.

Lets see.... at the time FedEx made the decision.... A380 was late with no firm position on A380F availability. Other customers were cancelling/converting. FedEx was risking being stuck as the only operator of a type which might or might not be built.

On the other hand, they could get compensation from Airbus, walk out and buy the 777F a freighter from the company that owns 85% of the long haul freighter market and is a derivative of an airplane that is beating all its performance guarantees.

Hummm..... let me think. I think they did the right thing. I'd venture to say that the loading time of 3 77Fs is about the same as the 2 A380s - 3 decks vs 4 decks. So they didn't lose anything.

The 747 doesn't fit in FX ops, because of the use of containers.In addition , their problem is not weight, but volume. Flying the 747 means 25 to 30% of the main deck volume will be lost. You don't make money by transporting air.

About the 777, I see it as an interim aircraft first, because of the A380 delay, and after that, as an MD11 replacement. (in the FX configuration, you have 26 top deck positions on the MD11, and only 27 for the 777; other advantage is range at heavy payloads)

But I would not be surprised, following what F Smith declared in various newspapers in Jan/Feb, to see an order around 2011, and delivery around 2014/15. The idea is that at this time, productions problems at Airbus will be solved, development of A350 will be advanced enough to free engineers for the development of the A380F. And having the return of experience from the pax version, it should be even better than planned initially.

The A388F makes a better package hauler then the 747F thanks to the greater volume (which is all that matters to FX as the cargo density of their package freight is low). An A388F offers about 11% more volume then a 747-8F and about 25% more space then a 744F.

A 77F will lift two-thirds the weight and volume of an A388F across the same distance, so the fifteen 777Fs FX bought are essentially a 1:1 replacement for their 10 A388Fs in terms of capacity and capability.

Another point in favor of a future A380 order: the silence.
More airports are putting restrictions on noise, especially for night flights. (this happens more in Europe than in the US)

For instance, in CDG, each airline is limited to a global noise level for night flights. Using 1 A380 vs 2 777 will give you flex in your noise envelope. FX could be able to add several 757s or A300s to feed the intercontinental flights, without breaking the limits. This + TGV train + buying night slots from other operators are the only ways for growth.

And an equivalent scenario can apply in several EU airports.

I had wondered how many airports would be able to handle the aircraft. I know Memphis extended or built a new runway to handle any type of aircraft fully loaded, including the A380. I read awhile back that 1 A380 could handle the cargo of 2 DC-10s on routes to Paris, for example. Well, in time the A380 will be a relic and FedEx will probably wind up buying them say 25 years down the road for freighters!!
