An AA MD80 diverted to FAT about 5:15 tonight due to a warning light indicating a possible oil leak in an engine. The flight had departed SJC for DFW when the light came on.

This makes the 2nd time this week that an AA MD80 has diverted to a Central California airport due to a warning light. Another flight diverted to BFL on Tuesday.

Doesn't sound like anything too serious. The pilots did the right thing by taking precautionary measures and landing the airplane as soon as possible. It could have been a facetious warning, but its good to get it checked out first.

I thought this was a repost of the first for a minute. Shows how much I know my central CA cities.

Looks like they wanted to go all the way back to SJC at first.

It became serious enough that the crew shutdown the left engine & maintenance explained it as a "catastrophic loss of oil quantity." In any case it does appear the initial plan was to return to SJC or possibly SFO, but once the engine was secured... nearest suitable becomes the "new" plan and FAT is certainly "suitable."

And not surprisingly, both flights were Mechanical Delay-80s. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/A...3/history/20071219/0247Z/KSFO/KLAX

It better be, as I flew in an AA MD80 from DFW-FAT in 1992.  Smile
