Hi

Did Swissair use the 743 on the ZRH-ATL route back in July 1998, or was this already downgraded to the MD-11?

Could someone perhaps also tell me what time the DL flight from ATL-ZRH (1997/98) took off?

Thanks

Note the OS bird in the last shot...this was a short-lived service lasting one winter season, in the twilight of the "Atlantic Excellence" partnership involving DL, SR, SN, and OS.

After the last B743 flight in 2000 did operations switch right away to A332 (3 Class) or was there an MD11 also used before that? This route was operated once daily if I remember?

I believe so, but I also believe it was axed quite quickly after the retirement of the 747s, when DL cancelled the partnership with SR. I don't know what equipment was operated after the 747s until the route was cancelled.

The route remained I think till the grounding and at the final stages I know it was an A332, however I thought that straight after the B743 left the fleet the flight was operated for a few months by an MD11. I doubt we will see LX start flying to ATL, especially as DL is serving this route from ZRH.

Yeah, that was about two years, so "was axed quickly" might be a bit over the top, but it certainly didnt remain for long.

They certainly won't.

Saw the SR 747-300 several times in ATL during the late 1990's. Back then, they had a codeshare closely with DL. Also, Sabena used to codeshare with DL and I saw a 747-300 that was regular at CVG. Then Belgium and Switzerland fell in love with AA and switched to DFW. SN with the A332, and Swissair on a codeshare with an American 772 to ZRH. Of course, the codeshares have been axed right after 9/11.

It was more like DL finishing the partnership with SR Group / Qualiflyer. It had to do with DL choosing to join Sky Team and set up a partership with AF and it could also be that DL somehow felt what was going on within the SR Group after also OS left and decided to leave the sinking ship. Not sure though if this really was the reason for DL discontinuing the partnership. Any more detailed clarification apreciated.

Back then i quite often flew to ZRH out of ATL on SR. One day they used the B-747 on other days it was the MD-11's turn.

cheers: DALelite

They loved to fly and it showed..

Swissair's two B743 full passenger aircraft (HB-IGE and HB-IGF) were mostly deployed on the SR120/121 ZRH ATL ZRH run, and that lasted until the last aircraft was finally retired in January 2000, when SR121 ATL ZRH became the last commercial flight of the B743 for Swissair. After that the route went to MD11 and later to A332, which lasted until Swissair's grounding.

OK thanks for the info.

I flew that route in July 1998 but I just couldn't remember what for an airplane it was.
