With Great Lakes Airlines ending their SAF-DEN service in early January, and with American Eagle and Delta Connection delaying their RJ services to SAF until January 31. I have been wondering about the future of commercial aviation at SAF. While most Santa Fe locals will continue to use ABQ, the rationale for the new services is because of the growth of Santa Fe's film industry greats. However, according to the latest census estimates in 2006, the actual population of Santa Fe has actually dropped, and is now the fourth largest city in the state, after Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Rio Rancho. Without Great Lakes, this will leave only New Mexico Airlines for about a month with service to ABQ and TSM, which is pretty insignificant, and in the case of SAF-ABQ, useless. Could this lead to Delta and/or American scrapping plans for service to SAF? I have always thought that if these services actually turn out to be successful, United Express could operate SAF-DEN on their own metal instead of codesharing with Great Lakes.
