Congratulations to GOL. Aviation in some Latin American countries is coming of age, specially in Brazil. The 737 is perfectly suited for what they do, excellent choice going with the 737NG.

Quoting PanAm_DC10 (Thread starter): GOL have exercised 34 additional 737-800 Options to take their firm orders for the model to 161
Thanks for all news this morning (for me, not morning for PanAm_DC10).
Boeing is firming up alot of orders before new years eve.
What's their order total now? They should have a lead over Airbus for about a 100 frames or so.

I wonder how many of these frames are for Varig to replace older frames, also with this it would look more likely for a Boeing order for wide bodies next year.

There is still an UFO from 28.9. for 34 738s, I guess this is the order.

In my opinion there is an undisclosed order for 34 x 738s placed on 28 September 2007 and that would be the options exercise. The other 40 appear to be new orders. There are still 132 Undisclosed 737 orders listed on the Boeing O&D site and if the 34 are UFO then that leaves 98 yet to be disclosed. I believe it's a little hard to ascertain the exact breakdown but we'll know more next week or the week after.

Thanks for the news Panam_DC10, amazing how Gol become so huge customer for Boeing and let's wait for the long-haul decision.

Varig is receiving some 738 now and their 733 fleet replacement already begin (and it's expected to end in 2008 as per Gol's Press Release). IMO this new order as well as the options confirmed are just because of the higher demand and the expectation that in 2010/2012 they will need additional planes to fill the demand.
My big concern is.... there is no infra-structure right now (and even in 2011) for all these additional birds.

I don't think so as they were options. IIRC they already reserved a delivery slot which means it's not required to place a new UFO order.

A side note... Gol has reduced their fleet plan for the 767-300 to 14 from up to 18 by 2012 (+2 in 2009, +1 in 2011 and +1 in 2012). The last 763 addition will be in 2008 to begin probably MAD (1 or 2 frames), MIA and EWR (2 to 3 frames).

Boeing press release implies order is NOT firm. Also doesn't highlight 34 as previous UFO.
