RG is going nonstop to FCO from GIG via GRU starting in February (it currently operates to FCO via CDG). New Schedule is as follows:

RG 8734 GIG GRU 21.00 22.00 daily 763
RG 8734 GRU FCO 23.10 14.30 daily 763

RG 8735 FCO GRU 22.30 07.00 daily 763
RG 8735 GRU GIG 08.00 09.00 daily 763

So for summer 2008 from Rome to Brasil we have:

FCO-GRU-GIG daily 763 RG

FCO-GRU 6xw 777 AZ

and probably FCO-GIG 3xw 763 AZ

Incredible to me, considering that MXP got most of RG's services before and now AZ is de-hubbing MXP. Does MXP have any service to Brazil?

TAM flies 1 daily M11 MXP-GRU and there will be 3xw 777 MXP-GRU by AZ as well.

How longer will the MD11s remain with JJ? Will the A345s take the MD11 routes such as GRU-MXP?

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

It will be no surprise if Alitalia and VARIG restart code-share agreement between Italy and Brazil in their respective flights.

Their old agreement was settled to keep TAM away from Italy in 2000/2001. But now there is no way to get rid of JJ in MXP, but reunite forces between AZ and RG is a reasonable outcome to regain the market for these two ex-bankrupt airlines.

I must yet reiterate that VARIG is now very close to SkyTeam: code-share with Air Europa, Air France-KLM and Delta are expected.

Expected to be replaced by the 4 Boeing 777-300ER acquired in 2006 to be delivered during June/August 2008.

The MXP route should be operated with B77W or A345.

Now become even more interesting. With RG, JJ and even AZ focusing São Paulo market (as well as connections from other Brazilian States), i do believe FCO-GIG will be a winner !

Also, no one understands better GIG-Europe market than AF and as they couldn't get allocation for a AMS-GIG flight, FCO-GIG could be the alternative to offer a second gateway to connect Rio de Janeiro.

What is the latest on VARIG? I would think things are rather shakey.

Why would you expect that?

Things are going pretty smoothly under their new ownership. Miami is re-launching this spring; Newark and Lisbon in the summer.

They are re-entering markets that have been filled with lots of capacity from other carriers. I would consider MEX and MIA and CDG to be very tough markets unless they compete on fares only.

Well, AM is serving MEX-GRU with 7x weekly flights, 5 with 772ER and 2 with 762ER if I am not mistaken. There is still more room for non-stop services. Ocean Air is flying to MEX but it is not achieving break-even loads, so I would venture to say that their demise is imminent. RG should do well to MEX if they are a bit cheaper than AM. AM urgently needs to turn GRU into an all-777 station. The competition here is also LA and CM.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I wonder why KLM couldn't get allocations to do AMS-GIG.

MIA won't be tough because nobody really replaced their capacity, although Aerolineas Argentinas plans on entering MIA-GRU this spring (though we'll see if it even happens. They keep delaying it).

Varig themselves are the ones dumping a lot of excess capacity, oddly enough. Madrid is going to be 2x daily, Miami is going to be served with four daily flights.

ANAC denied access to Southeastern and Southern airports for the 7 additional frequencies that were negotiated in the bilateral revision in November.

Am I correct in thinking that Varig still hasn't returned to LHR? Do we know when that's likely to occur? Only they are back in MAD and FRA I believe, and now apparently FCO and LIS are on the cards, so can we expect LHR at some point soon?

Actually, Varig is flying GRU-LHR, as well as FRA, CDG and FCO in Europe. MAD starts again this month, and plans are for MIA, NYC (the actual airport not clear yet) and apparently LIS. In South America, service continues in EZE, SCL, BOG and CCS.

This is what KL demands but ANAC and the Brazilian Government are a lot funny: They always announce that further distribution outside São Paulo is requested but at time of authorize something to Rio, they include Rio (as it's well served to all major hubs) on the same problem as São Paulo and because of that, extra frequencies to Netherlands were grant only to Northeast. But AF/KL is trying to change this.

Oh yes! They could fly FCO-GIG daily, considering the fact that they will serve GRU 9x weekly.
