Are there any good websites outlining the history and relevance of the various colorful tails they used in the early 1990s?

It was something of a pre-cursor to the BA World Tails and I'd like to see all of them collected and pictured in one place. I understand that the designs are taken from tapestries and pottery in various parts of Mexico, and alot of work went into the whole design and marketing scheme.

Hi Cf-CPI,

Don't know if it's what you're looking for, but here is a link to my album of Mexicana aircraft with the special tail art: El Arte de Mexicana

Cheers,

Edward

Great album. Airbus 225RX was my favorite tail, saw that aircraft a couple of times at LAX. love that color.

Thanks for the album link. It's nice to browse all of them back-to-back for comparison. I hope for posterity's sake someone documents the history of this scheme. Had this originated in the US, Britain or Asia, there would have been much more commotion about it.

Juventus - it seems that DC-10 N1003W had your preferred gold/blue design as well.

Does anybody know how many total DC-10s got painted in this scheme? I thought that MX had a total of 5 - not that many- so there is hope that all of them got the treatment before they were retired in 1995.

Maybe MX's Public Relations office in the corporate Xola offices have something about that. I'll try to get you contact information after January 2nd.

Ironic how they are now all painted in a boring, monochromatic black/dark blue.

Both AM and MX got boring. I thought the polished metal looked great on the AM planes, especially the 767. I can imagine that parked at LHR or some other major destination and catching everyone's attention. But now? Dull. At least the reports are that the AM 777 is very nice inside.

Indeed, on both accounts.

AM made public the cost of maintaining the high-polish finish in their a/c was becoming way too high. In addition, the 73NG and the 738s joining the fleet (and which shall shortly repalce all the MadDogs) have a number of composite parts that simply do not look good anymore with the polished aluminum skins.

There is still one T7, the N745AM ("Frida Kahlo"?) Still sporting the polished aluminum skin. Its twin sister, N746AM ("Diego Rivera"?) and the ex-RG T7s all are painted in the boring eurowhite scheme now.

And about MX... The new scheme is hopeless... So sad to have lost what was left of the elegant "ethnic" feeling patterned in the vertical stabilizers... And, together with that, the f/a uniforms (especially some nice one-piece dresses) are gone, displaced by monotonous and unimaginative newer versions too...

Oh, well... Let's see how long it takes for the Azcárraga administration to reinvent the wheel. When it happens, let's hope for some panache and savoir faire to exalt the dignity and pride of MX's 86 years airborne...
