First of all I would like to wish all A Netters a Happy and Healthy New Year.

With that said, what does 2008, have to bring the aviation industry??
We will have the first flight and hopefully first delivery of the B787,
More A380 to be delivered and hopefully more orders
More definition on the A350, and hopefully a 2nd engine choice
The B777F comes out next year.
Some more information on the B737RS and the A320R/S
Will the A350 keep eating into the B777, or will it have another wonderful year.
Can the A320 and B737 continue to have Strong sales

And of course lots and lots of new orders, from the likes of, AA, UA, DL, LH, AF/KL, , ,

I'm hoping not much consolidation.

Hope the 797 gets delivered. Don't want Boeing ending up like Airbus. I don't think we should expect too many more A380 orders soon. Airlines are in enough financial problems as it is. The A350 God only knows what will happen with that aircraft. Really excited for the B777f it is a nice aircraft that will hopefully do well. A350 right now isn't touching the 777. I believe the A320 will be a little stronger than the 737 but I guess we'll have to see! Thats my  twocents  .

Maybe a merger?

Also - hoping for a plan that helps cancel out a lot of the airport congestion.

I think the biggest thing we will see in 2008 is a US order. DL will need to place a 787 order along with AA. UA is a wild card though, they are pretty strong with the 777 so i don't think they would order the A350 until they talked to boeing about a 777NG, so i could definately see them ordering the 787 as a 767 replacement. But i really can't wait to hear what boeing and airbus have to say about the 737 and A320 replacement, it seems like they are really waiting more for new engines before fully committing to the project.

My guesses:

1.) At least one merger between major carriers

2.) Two smaller players go belly-up (Skybus & a carrier from Hawaii)

3.) Higher ticket prices due to record fuel prices

4.) Finally some new plane orders from the big guys (AA, DL?)

5.) More delays ...

6.) Some carriers improve their service when they realize that people are willing to pay for it

7.) LH goes on a buying spree  Big grin

Ok, the last two points are wishful thinking but who knows?

Happy New Year!

In the US maybe. The big European Airlines are going to announce record profits, and I don't think the large Asian Airlines are doing badly either.

Which would be what? Airbus had some issues... The delays are over and they are building a/c and taking orders?

Quoting Jetblueguy22 (Reply 2):

Doubtful... We said that in the summer and they got BA & AR to buy. I would say CI and AI would look strongly at buying a few each.

Quoting Jetblueguy22 (Reply 2):

Really so SQ, BA, CX, LH, AF are hurting? Problems are only at NW is all honest which are still in bankruptcy protection.

Then why are carriers ordering it?

My predictions for Minnesota aviation:

1. a foreign carrier starts service to MSP (BA, LH, AM, AF?)  pray

2. NW announces replacement for DC-9s and 742F's

3. a carrier starts service to DLH (Duluth, MN)

Some kind of consolidation will take place. I believe things will be sold off in pieces from the struggling carriers, to help them concentrate on what's working for them.

Southwest will announce another profitable year and they will probably have a few surprise announcements for us.

Skybus will make some radical changes to their business model or go bust.

I made a similar thread here yesterday which was quickly banished to Polls and Preferences where it withered and died.

I predicted:

1. JetBlue will be purchased- The buyer will be UA who, combined with LH's remaining share, give Star Alliance a presence in the Big Apple and secures them valuable slots in prior to the inevitability at JFK.

2. The C-Series will be launched, much to the chagrin of A-Netters, by NW who go for 80 frames.

3. Olympic Airways will finally be liquidated when the EU says no more to the Greek Government. AF/KLM pick up the pieces and get themselves a top-modern hub in the Eastern Meditteranean.

1. There will be no mergers of major airlines in the USA, either legacy or LCC.

2. NK will sell their ACY, DTW, and ORD operations to B6.

3. YV will file for Chapter 11, and will reject many CRJ/ERJ leases, causing an overall reduction in 50 seat capacity in the US market. YV will withdrawal from Hawaii and the CRJ-200 ops for UA.

4. The YV, F8, MQ, and OW certificates will be owned by four different owners at the end of 2008. One of them will be Republic, who will move their AA flying to either the MQ or OW cert. One of the others will be XE, who will use either the YV or F8 cert to add 70+ seat flying to their business.

5. XE will continue to operate their branded flying in the west. XE will continue to operate the Eastern routes, but under the DL express brand, which will grow to include routes from RDU that can no longer be flown by MQ due to the AA scope clause.

6. QX will purchase the entire SAS fleet of Q400's, and will completely replace all MQ flying out of LAX.

7. AQ will be sold to MatlinPatterson. All mainland-to-HI flying will be transferred to TZ. AQ will purchase Sukoi Superjets to replae their intraisland 732 fleet.

8. SY will be sold to WN. DL will pick up the 738 fleet.

9. The MD90 fleet from SV will be purchased by NW, who will use the fleet to help retire their DC9's.

With regard to the numerous mention of mergers, I want to propose two questions for any opinion you guys might have...

When looking at all of the commercial airlines serving North America, which two airlines have the best compatibility with regard to route map, aircraft/engine type, passenger loyalty, etc.?

Also, which of the rumored mergers would have the most difficulty staying solvent?

Looking forward to some animated discussion on these questions.

Happy 2008!! - Womack17

787-10 frozen. Either HGW with prospects of future stretch, or, if still "light" (a large market by itself), but then serious considerations of proper successor of 777 (while 777 had another strong year, "wait and see" won't work much longer, as 350 is a real thing now).

More VLA sales (new 748I customers, anyone  Smile?), but VLA will still stay a niche market.

More about bio-fuel. If a breakthrough, then more than just new fuel source on a horizon, but radical changes in whole world economy, when oil suddenly is not a wealth foundation anymore.

More about Aerion. May be, first serious discussion of airliner version (they were already talking about 30-seats stretch).
