Hello there and a happy 2008 first of all.
Just returned from Vieques Island near Puerto Rico. Apparently, American Eagle had started service there in 2005 or at least planned to. Anybody knows if that ever really happened or not and why or why flights have ceased? At the small airport there was still an American Eagle sign. Any info welcome!

No idea, but my counter question, does Vieques Aviation still fly there to downtown Puerto Rico with Trislanders? Hope you can write a short trip report. I tried to fly them in 2004 when I was there but I didn't due to hurricanes.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

As far as I know, there are two issues:
1) Airport certification for the ATR
2) Unfinished Hotel and resort projects. The size of the local traffic is uneconomical for American Eagle ATRs, but fine for the Viques Airlink Trislanders and Islanders. (they serve from, Fajardo, Isla Grande, and if memory serves me well also from Luis Munoz Marin airport).
