Flicked on my TV a few ago, and there's a show called Best Evidence.. They're talking about how Jet A1 fuel contrail exhaust could be toxic. I'm curious to see if anyone can shed some light on if it is or isn't, and if it is, how badly toxic it is.

I'm thinking there shouldn't be too much exhaust with the environmental standards these days.

Something awful.

Air China once had a very bad accident with chemtrail fluid. It leaked out of the aircraft during maintenance and filled the hanger. The stuff is so toxic that the clothes on the maintenance personnel dissolved and the people themselves turned silver. Very bad stuff!!

Of course it's toxic...it would be just like inhaling the exhaust out of your car. SOx, NOx, CO...all kinds of nasties.

Not very. At least, no worse that what's coming out the back of several hundred cars and trucks that we spend a lot of time in much greater proximity to than we do airplanes.

Airplanes burn a lot of fuel...that means a lot of exhaust. It's a lot better than it used to be thanks to improving efficiency but the absolute quantity of exhaust keeps going up as more and more planes enter service. As long as we're burning Jet-A (or any other petroleum-derived fuel) you're going to have some nasties in the exhaust.
