This news has been reported in at least another thread, but I believe it is worth its own thread.

Starting at the end of March, British Airways mainline is operating a daily red-eye flight to Malta from London Gatwick, using Boeing 737-400, with the following schedules:

BA2872 LGW-MLA 2155-0210*

BA2871 MLA-LGW 0525-0730

The flight times sound very charter/LCC-style. Does BA offer the traditional BA inflight service with free food and drinks or is it buy-on-board? How many seats do their B737-400 have nowadays?

The flights are redeyes both ways and I think that BA will do very well: BA make a same-day return trip to London from Malta possible. Moreover, nobody offers such a daily late departure to Malta from a London airport. BA are also going to be the first flight out to London and I think that on most days BA will be the first flight out of Malta.

Well, a 06:00 deperture from Malta would have been better. As for the return flight from London, KM has some late departures from LHR in Summer.

The big question now is whether those services will be kept for the winter season and what's gonna happen with all GT staff in MLA?!

Next flights : BRU-ZRH-CAI (LX)/ BRU-FCO-TLV (AZ)

This is really great news for me!

First it means I can continue to use my Miles, Second it also means I can spend the weekends over there and fly back for work Monday morning after annoying the parents!

Is the club Europe layout the same on the 737 as on the 320?

Best Regards

Struds

Air Malta usually has a late departure from LHR to Malta between mid-July and mid-August on Fridays or Saturdays... it doesn't sound like much competition to BA to me.

There are no GT staff in MLA. The GT flights were managed by the BA office. It's good news for them that BA will still operate to MLA as they had already been given the letter of the sack. Pehaps now some of them will be retained. As for all these airlines operating from London (KM, BA, FR, U2 and BA) I think the market will be over saturated. As will many other routes with all the LCC's flying to MLA. Malta is a small island and can handle only so much tourists. In my opinion I will not be surprised to see airlines dropping MLA altogether from theri skeds. Cases in point are Meridiana and
BritishJet. AirMalta still remains the best airline serving London with two flights a day and good connections.

The departure of BritishJet won't entirely mean a reduction in capacity. Its parent company, Malta Bargain Holidays, will be flying its customers on Air Malta instead. Air Malta has said in a press release that it will "expand considerably" its operations to the UK as a result.

Air Malta flies twice daily to LHR, and have more than 7 weekly flights to LGW, year-round (not to mention their STN flights). In summer, there are additional KM flights to all three airports. Thomsonfly fly a weekly charter flight to LGW year-round and a one way ticket ex-MLA to LGW can be bought for as low as £38 all inclusive last time I checked - that could be even cheaper than FR! (During the summer schedule, several other charter companies fly in from LGW).

I am expecting BA to operate LGW-Malta daily by the time the winter timetable actually kicks in. 4x weekly does not appeal to the higher-yielding point-to-point traffic they seem to be after.

Well that would make sense... And the timings are better than those of GB airways. Passengers will now be able to connect on both ways to UK domestic flights and some other European flights like EDI, GLA, MAN, JER, AMS, DUB, BRU or WAW.

A slightly off topic question :

Casablanca is not bookable at all now. It is not listed as a BA destination nor as an EZY one. What will happen after March29th?

The problem is that some PAX have already booked flights to CMN on ba.com. Nobody is taking care of those. It either EZY did not get the rights to operate CMN-LGW or BA is planning to take over the route at the last moment like they did with MLA and PFO.
