15 planes this winter, 9 of their own and 6 from Transavia. The are now using 2 hangers in MSP. They have their own and are now using the former XJ hanger that Mesaba returned to MAC (Airport Commission), when they filed Chap 11.

You can view their web site at Suncountry.com

Their website shows new seasonal weekday JFK-PBI service

Seems a strange move from a carrier that usually avoids competition to enter the crowded NYC-South Florida market, especially when I suspect they will have limited brand recognition in both NYC and South Florida

Very interesting, since B6 already had 7 daily roundtrips, however no one was competing against them, and SY is actually pricing out cheaper on some dates.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Southwest buy Sun Country soon. Sun Country has 3 gates in Minneapolis and flies new 737s.

And it looks like JFK SAN.

They run a tight sechduel with the amount of aircraft they have, no room for error.

Yeah but they are -800s not -700s. But they could buy Sun Country and get rid of the -800s. But would WN benefit much out of a buy out? I really do not think they would.

Quoting D328 (Reply 7):

The Boyd Group has called for WN to buy SY.

It's been argued that the -800s would be extremely profitable in their consistently high density routes like HOU-DAL (or was it AUS-DAL?). The 4th FA thing is sorta blown out of proportion. The real increase in costs would come from the airframes themselves. And as such, makes it seem a bit less attractive.

They would benefit from getting a foothold at MSP, 1 gate at DEN, an some gates in some other locations (many of which WN already flies to).

However, I don't think WN really wants to butt heads with another legacy at the moment. NW would go thermonuclear if WN moved in to their fortress hub. They still have their work cut out for them going at it with UA at DEN, and only recently made nice with AA.

It would be really nice if a Canyon Blue 737 were to land at MSP, the door opened, and a WN rep announced "People of Minneapolis! We are here to liberate you from the tyranny of Northwest Airlines!" But we're probably quite a ways off from that yet.

More like five gates, actually.

No, that is not one line on the route map; it may look like it but that is showing JFK-MSP and MSP-SAN. JFK-SAN is not in the schedule either.

Other new routes for them include DFW-Cozumel, DFW-Montego Bay, and the recently-started MSP-TUS and MSP-PBI flights.

So why doesn't WN have them? Seems to me the only real purpose in purchasing SY would be for the gates in MSP. What good is 9 738s going to do WN?

Also seems to me WN did pretty well butting heads with UA in good ol' DEN.

But let's rip apart Boyd's idea before I get too into this...Petters Group isn't all too keen about a buyout. And plus, the ad campaign for SY is terrific, highlighting the free cheeseburgers (Bon Appetit!!), better service, shorter lines, etc. It doesn't appear likely they want to sell their airline to an airline where they are focused on efficiency above customer service (though CS isn't bad...), seating isn't assigned, food isn't served, etc. Especially not when they just bought into this airline within the last 5 years.

WN doesn't have them because they don't need them. I'm merely illustrating the numerous routes in which WN could use 738s. There seems to be this notion here on A.net that a 4th FA would be the apocalypse for WN. Even OPNLguy has said that they could easily accommodate it into their scheduling system, and quite a few routes have the pax load to justify their usage.

And yes, the real coup would be the five gates at MSP. Not the A/C. But like I said, I don't foresee them going there just yet. Vague hints dropped by Kelly aside, I don't think you'll see WN buying out anybody this year. Instead, you'll see optimization, slow growth, and a gradual retirement of older 733s.

I like how DL connection operated by Skywest's gates say see monitors. Wouldn't they use the same gates as Delta does?

SY has no gates outside of MSP. All operations are outsourced, usually to DL, MQ, CO, F9, or an independent ground handling company.

I'm not sure, but don't they have some of their own at DFW? Or did I dream that?

That would make a great movie methinks..

It looks as if SY is doing great alone. I haven't seen much of them around here partly because of the time of their arrival here.. They sure look purty..

Sun Country has great spirit! I love the story of how this little airline was saved by its determined and hard working employees. For that reason alone I would choose to fly with them.

Sun Country is a great airline and a alternative in MSP on certain routes. I like Sun Country's MSP-JFK service. It is somehow cute when the Sun Country 737 pulls up at the gate of T4 at JFK next to all the international wide bodies.

There have been many, many rumors within AirTran over the past several months about a SunCountry takeover. Maybe we'll see a big "Save the Cheeseburger" campaign!

Petters Group now owns 100% of the company and 80% of the voting stock, so I don't think they are looking for any investors. Petters group became a major investor / owner over a year ago after talking to the company for over a year or two.

On the other hand Champion Airlines next door @ MSP is hurting and may close down by Aug. 08 when their NBA contract is up. NWA has pulled a lot of business (MLT Tours) away from Champion, Champion has also been having a hard time keeping its pilots.
